Videographer Drama

Izzy, on September 2, 2020 at 6:41 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

So I started hiring vendors over the summer including the videographer. The videographer seemed very avoidant yet said yes anyway. He didn’t want to talk about details until we got closer to the date. Fine, I understand that. Come early August and we’re making the final decisions and neither my fiancé or I can get ahold of our videographer. We waited, but wrote him off assuming he back out and ghosted us. Which he didn’t get a deposit from us or anything so that’s fine. A family friend who’s attending oh so kindly offered to record the first look and the ceremony for us on her fancy camcorder so we decided to do that instead. NOW I get a text out of nowhere from the videographer wanting to talk wedding plans. We told him we wouldn’t be needing him anymore because we got someone else to do it. He was ok with that, but instead wanted to offer us a wedding gift of a short highlight reel for free when we go do off location pictures. I’m personally am ok looking over everything because I really liked his work and wanted something like the highlight reel he’s offering. My fiancé, however, is really upset with his lack of professionalism and is not a big fan of him being involved anymore. I’m not too pleased with how the videographer went about things, but (as awful as this sounds) I‘ll be able to get what I want and for free too. My fiancé and I have no clue what to do, any advice?

You did right by telling the videographer thank you but you have found someone else to work with. Move on and cease contact. Do not accept his gift.
If he wanted your business he would have been much more receptive and easier to communicate with. Too late for anything from him now after his unprofessional and uncalled for behavior.

He said he would do it for free? that's kind of cool actually aha. but i can see how you would be weary of his offer because of his previous behavior

I would be very, very wary of this situation and would decline.

I agree with the previous comments, I would probably decline the offer.

Right, no matter how you word it he was still very unprofessional. He seemed to create a lot of problems that didn’t need to be there 🙄

I know right? It was awesome of him to offer that, but the way he went about things kinda spoiled it all. If only I could have that service but by someone entirely different 😅

I would not accept the offer as I am quite doubtful that you’ll actually be getting what you think you are. It is likely one of those incentives where ‘if you book for a period of X hours or more, get a free highlights reel!’ (for example) – just ask yourself, what will this videographer gain by filming some footage, editing it, and giving you a highlights reel totally free of charge.

In saying this, as you want a highlights reel, I would seek another videographer elsewhere. If it is something you would really like, don’t deprive yourself of it because of this bad experience, find someone who can do it for you who actually conducts their business professionally.

My fiancé brought that point up too that he may have a motive behind offering this gift, even if it’s just to get some free publicity. Unfortunately this videographer was the only one I could find within budget, the rest went into the thousands. But then again I guess this is what happens when you try to go with a much cheaper one lol. I’ll keep looking around 😅

I would decline just so that you don't get your hopes up just for him to ghost you again.

There is a good chance he is trying to protect his reviews online, if he gives you a beautiful video you are less likely to mention the lack of professionalism. I would be wary of accepting the offer personally but it is totally your call.
