Vests for groom as a solution to tailoring issue during Covid?

Theresa, on May 16, 2020 at 5:57 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

I was hoping to get opinions on the look of a groom and groomsmen in vests instead of jackets/suits? I had my heart set on getting my fiance a custom tailored dark gray suit, white shirt, and black tie (groomsmen in black with gray ties, probably rental suits). FH is a bodybuilder with 20in arms, so there is no off the rack suit that is going to fit him. I am getting nervous about our timeline and being able to actually get him a properly tailored suit with most stores still shut down here in Colorado. Our wedding is September 6th. I am altering my dress (tons of experience in historical costuming and corsetry) and have toyed with the idea of trying to help him, but I am terrified of men's suit tailoring, which I feel is on a completely different level. Anyway, I wanted to see how people feel about vests in general as stand-alone for guys. Way easier to fit, probably saves money in the end, but a much more casual look. Is it a good look or is it cheesy? Does anyone have other ideas for men's attire that is easier to fit or customize?

It depends on the look you're going for. You can order a suit on Etsy with custom measurements and have it delivered to you. Just filter the search area for North America shops only.

Our groomsmen are going just in their vests (although they will have to rent the full suit). My FH and the dads are going to be in full navy blue suits. I think it can look very sharp.
Plus depending on your venue and how casual it is, my friend had all her guys in jeans and vests. It looked very nice in her pictures.

It depends on how formal your wedding is going to be. I think if you have more laid back wedding that vests are fine, but a more formal wedding I would a full suit would be better. Black Tux offers try on before you buy so you could always order a suit from them to see if it fits. Their program is free of charge.

I am in the exact same boat. We are skipping jackets and just doing vests

I hadn’t thought about doing that and changing the filters so we avoid weird Asian sizing issues. Still makes me a bit nervous for a suit. Do you know anyone who has done that?

Thanks for providing the picture. It is a sharp look even if it isn’t what I originally had in mind!

Thanks for the black tux recommendation. I’m still skeptical that anything will fit him without major modifications, but it’s worth a shot! We could try the vest option from there too.

We are almost date twins! Good to hear this is working out as someone else’s solution.
