Venue Won’t Let us Reschedule to a Saturday in Peak Season

Becca, on June 4, 2020 at 7:19 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 7
We are leaning towards rescheduling our August 22nd wedding (Wisconsin) and spoke with our venue today. They are not allowing us to reschedule to any Saturdays in peak season (May through October), only Fridays/Sundays, or November-April, where we risk snow. They’re not fully booked, just trying to make more money. It’s so frustrating and upsetting since we picked a summer Saturday wedding for a reason and now can’t get that. To top it off we can’t get a refund of our deposit (50% of our venue/catering costs). Has anyone else had this issue?

I'm so sorry you're having this issue!

Unfortunately, it seems common, since they would make more money on the price hike for next year.

Check your contract, hold your ground, and maybe talk to a lawyer.

    Good luck!

I'm sorry you're having to go through this! Many venues, from what I have been hearing from friends of mine who have had to postpone their weddings, are having some issues like this when it comes to rescheduling. Normally in a situation like this I would say check your contract, but since COVID-19 is something no one saw coming and many were not prepared for, something like this pandemic isn't covered in most contracts. I would say try and reason with your venue. Tell them the day you want and ask them if it isn't booked by a certain date if you can have it. Other than that, I agree with Rebecca, hold your ground and if needed, contact a lawyer. Just make sure you double and triple check your contract.

Super frustrating! Definitely make sure there’s nothing in your contract that would help you get back that cancellation fee or rate changes. I think the idea of trying to come to agreement that you’ll take a date at your current rate if it stays unhooked is a good one. Is there any room for negotiation on their increased rate for next year? Could you try and agree to 50% of the increased rate, so neither of you are out the full amount (you the increase and them the loss of not pricing with the current years rate). I wouldn’t give up trying to come to a agreement unless you’ve exhausted everything. If they won’t budge, a Friday wedding isn’t the worst. Not ideal or what you picked, but still a great day for a wedding. Best of luck!

Same thing happened to us where we would have to pay extra if we wanted to reschedule after May. So we just decided on a Saturday in April which we’re bummed about because the weather is a hit or miss here in IL. We didn’t want to pay extra for a later date because with talks about a second wave, who knows if we’ll even be able to have the wedding next year. At this point we just want to get it over with.

Our original wedding date was scheduled for Friday, September 25, 2020. Our venue told us we must pay $8,400 to reschedule to a Friday in 2021. If we cancel we'll lose our $10,000 deposit. What type of fees are you being charged to reschedule, if any?

Wow, that’s crazy. We had to pay an additional $1,000 to reschedule.

$1,000 seems more reasonable! It's heartbreaking that affected couples are being forced by some businesses to shoulder the burden for lost income during this pandemic. We're all hurting, we're all affected. Now, more than ever, is the time to be kind and fair with one another.
