Venue Questions

Alexis, on November 23, 2022 at 8:36 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 7
My significant other and I have been looking at venues online. We both have horrible anxiety when it comes to being around new people and share a lack of social skills. We are terrified of asking the wrong kinds of questions when it comes to touring venues in person. Any suggestions?

Can you have a friend with you who can help ask the right questions? Are you mostly looking for the proper questions to ask? are there any specific fears you have in mind? these may not be bad at all. You can also post a few of the questions here to see if anyone finds an issue with them.

If I’m being honest, I don’t know exactly where to begin when it comes to venues besides asking about capacity, what their timelines look like, and cost. We unfortunately don’t have many friends that are married yet.

First off, there are no “wrong kinds of questions.” Unless you’re inappropriately asking about the person’s personal life or something, you’re good. Any question that you have which would help you decide if a venue is the right space for your wedding is an appropriate question. I asked about things like how soon we could get into the venue to set up decor prior to the wedding, availability for rehearsal prior, if they require specific vendors, rates including taxes and fees, what decor (if any) they had available, including table cloth colors, etc. if the venue is an outdoor space, check what their plan B is for inclement weather (rain, record heat wave, snow, etc.). Also, many vendors require meals, so ask if there are specific vendor rates for meals, as well as per person cost for children or those under 21 if the venue includes an open bar. Those are the main questions off the top of my head. I believe there are lists online of questions to ask on venue tours.

Have you thought about getting a wedding planner to help? It may be easier for you to talk mainly to one person, rather than dozens of different vendors trying to choose.

When touring venues, here are some things that would be good to ask about:

    -Cost
    -Deposit amount
    -Remaining balance payment schedule
    -Cancellation/postponement policies
-What all is included (chairs, tables, etc)
-Whether they allow you to choose your own vendors, or if you have to use their preferred vendors
-Amount of time that you'll have the venue for (when you can access it on the day of and what time you need to be out by)
-Any prohibited decor items (candles, sparklers, fog machine, etc)
-Any fees that aren't included in the price (gratuity, tax, service fees, etc)
-Max number of people the venue can hold (including vendors)
-When the final count is due by
-Forms of payment that they accept

We weren't really sure either, so we had my MIL come with us and it was SO helpful. She asked questions I would have never thought of.
