Venue Question

Alyssa, on February 18, 2020 at 4:02 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7

We are currently looking at wedding venues and we have found one we really like and is within our price range. The ONLY downside is they just opened their doors late last year (2020) and I believe have had only one wedding at their venue. With all the stories going on right now about places going bankrupt we are hesitant to pick them as our venue. While we are aware that this can happen to a venue that has over 35 years in the business it is still worrisome. Also, when she was showing us the place she kept saying "oh, we still need to buy this and we are waiting for more bookings" or "i hope this will be ordered soon" and "we might not have that in time for your wedding due to those items being very expensive". My fiance was concerned with this and asked "how many bookings are you in need of to make these additions? And she was very professional and said she just needed more in order to financially supply them. While to me it makes business sense to take your time saving up for the things you need to make your venue beautiful and the fact that they are new at the same time we do have concerns that they will not be able to make ends meet and we will be without a venue. The venue is not in a popular part of town so I don't think its getting enough notice. The additions they were pointing out were not a deal breaker for me since the place is clean and minimal, which is why we chose the venue in the first place.

My question - Are we able to ask the venue how many bookings they currently have booked for the following year? They could be honest or not, but I think I would feel better knowing there was funds being poured back into the venue for the future, seeing as our wedding is a year away. Thoughts or anything else we should be concerned or aware of?

Many thanks!!!!!

How far out is your wedding ? Are these major things or little things that they can rent ? Honestly, I wouldn’t risk it unless I was contractually assured that those items would be present the day of or I’d be entitled to a partial refund/discount or the venue would include the rented items at a discounted rate.

I would keep looking. Venue is a huge deal and any red flags would be enough to make me look elsewhere

It seems like the venue is still trying to become established. I'm not sure how much experience they have had previously, but with them still being new there will be more room for error and are more likely to get into sticky situations as with any new business, there will be growing pains. I would discuss your concerns with them if you really like the place as well as continue to research other venues. I asked our venue during our tour how many weddings they had booked during the same month as ours, I don't think it hurts to ask. If you do decide to book with them, maybe look into wedding insurance and review the contract thoroughly to make sure if they are ever short on their end, that it would not be a burden to you.

What items do they not have? If they're misc. things that would make the venue more aesthetically appealing but aren't necessary, I'd still consider it. As long as they have tables and chairs for all of your guests, I wouldn't write it off just yet. Everyone has to start somewhere, right?

I think this is wonderful advice, thank you Nicole! We are thinking of maybe asking for a lower rate or insurance written within the contract.

If you love it and don't mind the items they don't have..i would first look into insurance and see if you can get some that will cover rescheduling if your venue closes...which it should cover. Depending on how much you are budgeting, you can get it for a couple hundred dollars. Then, with that safety net in place, I would go for it.
