My fiancé and I are planning our June 2018 wedding. We received a proposal from the venue we are planning on having both the ceremony and reception at the other day and was appalled at the amount they wanted to be paid prior to the wedding.

They wanted a $7,000 nonrefundable deposit a week after receiving the proposal and then a $10,000 payment in January 2017. That is over a year and a half before the wedding.

$17,000 paid over a year and a half out? Is this a normal practice for venues?

What is a normal payment schedule for wedding venues?

Thanks everyone. Yeah, the point of my question was to find out how other venues handled payment schedules and deposits. Here in the northern end of South Florida, my per person cost is around the same as most other venues in the area. My point was, it seemed like a lot of nonrefundable money to put down over 2.5 years prior to the wedding and then, again, another very large payment 1.5 years prior and I was curious how other venues were handling payments. I appreciate all of the feedback so quickly!

Mine is a little more complicated but not nearly that much. The deposit was $1,000 and then I have to pay the remaining in quarters- 9 months, 6 months, 3 months, and 1 week.

I would worry less about how much it is and more about your budget. If you feel like you can afford to pay so much up front and are confident that it's the venue you want then I wouldn't worry so much. If you're saving as you go then I could see so much up front being an issue. I know we wouldn't be able to do so much right away. I would really scour reviews though, just to make sure that they don't have dissatisfied customers who have tried to cut out and run a lot- hence so much up front.

That seems like a lot to put down at once, especially so far in advanced. My venue wanted $1000 the day I signed the contract, then $1500 6 weeks later, and another $1500 10 months before the wedding. 50% of remaining balance 3 months prior, and final balance due 10 days before the wedding.

Our share of the wedding is costing us $11,600.00 for venue/food/drink mix/linen/chairs/DJ (We are bringing our own alcohol)

    Wedding is in June 2020

Does this sound like a fair payment schedule for us and the venue?

    April 2019 deposit of $2,050

    June 2019 $800

    September 2019 $800

    January 2020 $800

    February 2020 $800

    March 2020 $1,600

    April 2020 $1,600

    May 30, 2020 $3,150.00

    Overages: week after wedding
