Venue Out of business! Now what?!? 😩 1

Need advice! Our all inclusive wedding venue just sent me a letter saying they are out of business is of February 2021 😭. The company was called “The Rustic Lace Barn” located in Colorado Springs. We postponed our wedding to 8/20/21 from 2020. No mention of going out of business was ever mentioned! Has anyone had to deal with any of their vendors going out of business due to. COVID??? I’d love some advice and help if you have!! We have already paid them $8,000... Can we get any of this money back? Should we contact a lawyer. I don’t even know where to start. Let alone trying to re-re-plan a wedding in 160 days. Ladies please help! 😩😩

Unfortunately because they’re liquidating, and likely have creditors to pay off, you probably won’t be able to get anything back. This has been the terrible situation so many couples have found themselves in due to Covid. You can try to talk to an attorney, but I would guess that you’d spend more in legal fees than you’d actually be able to recover from the business. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this!

Is there anything in your contract? Mine says that if for any reason the venue can not hold a wedding (closure, bankruptcy, shut down) we get fully refunded.

I would definitely check your contract to see if there is any clause relating to the cancellation or closure.

Unfortunately, the letter hints at your answer. It notes they have “minimal assets” that will be sold, at an estimate of $6k, & given to creditors. But, I do think you should reach out & clarify the issue of what you’ve paid, assuming your contract doesn’t say it’s non-refundable.

Do you have wedding insurance? I think this is one of the classic cases of where it’s helpful.
In terms of planning, just start! Alert any vendors not part of the venue as soon as possible, & I would ask if they have any suggestions for new locations. Or, you may want to ask a family member with a large yard, as it may be a lot to pay for a whole new venue. Once you have a new venue, fill in the gaps if you lost any additional vendors that came with your venue, or if you had to change the date.

Veronica, my heart goes out to you!!! You poor girl and your fiancé!!! This is an out there idea, but just before the pandemic a very popular wedding venue in Pittsburgh went under, exactly like this situation. The brides all found each other on Facebook and had a group made. The radio station (100.7) had any bride/groom affected to call in and the community really rallied around them. Local wedding planners called in and offered free planning to help them find new venues. Existing venues called in willing to provide deep discounts to provide spaces. One man had a beautiful farm and called in stating he would be willing to host any couple affected at his farm for their wedding.
One girl went on the local tv station as her wedding was that following Saturday and no one from the location would answer her calls or was present on site.
Good luck girlie and we are here for you ❤️❤️❤️

Oh no I am so sorry this happened to you. I would definitely have a lawyer look over the contract. Praying that you'll get refunded your money!

I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I did a quick search to see if there were any other all-inclusive style venues in the same area, which appears to be Colorado Springs, and found this: https://www.herecomestheguide.com/wedding-venues/colorado/results?region%5B%5D=colorado-springs&use%5B%5D=all-inclusive I'm sure you've already looked here, but I thought in case you hadn't, I would link.

As for the venue, look at your contract. If you have the resources for an attorney, have them look over the contract. There may be nothing you can do, but it never hurts to have a consultation with an attorney about it.

Check your contract, view your wedding insurance policy, etc. If all else fails, contact a lawyer.

I am so so sorry for you!!! If you have wedding insurance or something outside of your contract with the venue then possibly you could get some money back. It is unlikely, however, that you will get anything much from the venue. When I worked for a bankruptcy attorney, most creditors were paid cents on the dollar of the amount they were owed and the rest was written off once all assets were sold/liquidated. You can't squeeze blood from a stone, after all.
