Venue lowered price after we signed contract

Evan, on June 13, 2019 at 3:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

Hello, we signed our venue contract in January 2019 for $3500 for Feb 22, 2020 before taxes and deposit. Earlier this month we noticed on their website they are now charging significantly lower for Jan and Feb weddings in 2020 at a rate of $1995. We have contacted the owners of the venue and they will not be changing the price for us. To us this is unfair and poor business practice, but is it illegal and do we have any ground to fight this? Thanks in advance.

I don't know if you have grounds to fight this but i do think that it's kind of rude of them not to let you have the difference.

No. You signed a contract and you're responsible for the price you agreed to in that contract. Just like when you buy a tshirt and it goes on sale the next week, you don't get your $5 back.

Unfortunately, no. They are probably doing promotional pricing to get booking during those months because its Winter. I've seen venues do that because they are low on bookings. You signed a contract agreeing to pay the $3500. It is not illegal, shady, but not illegal.

Unfortunately, no. They for sure should lower the price for you so that is ridiculous they didn't.

I feel like you should get the difference back because the price has lowered. however when we booked we were "locked into that price" so if the price changed it would not effect us. I've only ever heard of places raising their prices not lowering them. I dont think its illegal but it is definitely not fair.

You catch more flies with honey.. You could send them a friendly email or give them a call and simply ask. "Hey I noticed the price was significantly lowered, any chance you could match that price for us?" The worst they could say is no.. Maybe you'll get lucky 🤷

Unfortunately, no. Vendors usually don't give a lower price if you've already signed a contact. I got an amazing deal on my photographer/videographer/photobooth (like $1,500 off) with a lot of stuff for free, but all of their sales always say that they don't apply to current contracts. I think they should honor it for you, though!

    Nope. Not illegal.
They lowered the price because it is off season and less than a year out. They most likely won't book those dates without running a promotion.

Think of it this way, if the price went up should you have to pay the new price? No, you signed a contract. So why wouldn't the vendor have the same protection?

This is unfortunately totally normal. Vendors offer promotions all the time to book dates they have left, especially in off season.

We got a great deal on our photographer in Jan of 2019 for our Nov 2019 wedding because she was trying to book any/all dates she had left for the year.

The people who take advantage of that deal also only have about 6 months to plan and save $$, so the discount helps both the vendor and the client.

It's not illegal to offer promotions, and unfortunately price adjustments are not required. You might be able to negotiate something, but I wouldn't bet on it.

    No, you’ve signed a contract.
Its also possible they’ve only lowered the price as they have dates available and are offering the discount as a sort of desperation to fill the dates instead of them going empty, with it being well under a year away.

It's not unfair. Unfortunately this is how sales work. They are running a sale to book up their off season. They are allowed to do that as a business and they don't have to price match you.

If they had put the price up would you offer to pay the extra? Ut us unfortunate and certainly annoying but you accepted the price they offered and signed a contract so they are under no obligation to give you a discount.
