Venue Issues

on August 13, 2020 at 10:19 AM Posted in Planning 0 5
Is there anyone else out there dealing with major financial issues with their venue? It’s a very long story but basically we were scheduled to have a summer 2020 wedding, and when we called he owner of the venue (who is evidently insane) would not give us ANY info. My husband and I felt like we’d walk into our wedding day blind. He only told us we’d have to cut our guest list but wouldnt refund us what we had already overpaid for a bigger guest list. THEN they refused to postpone to our 2021 which we had already reserved with them because they are “going out of business” which we think is also a lie to try to force people to get married in 2020 so as not to lose revenue. To top it off, no refund.
I guess my question is, is anyone else going through this?? Or something similar. I’ve seen some horror stories but for the most part it seems people’s venues are working with them to find solutions which makes this situation feel even worse

So our original venue actually went bankrupt during COVID. Some of it was due to lack of revenue from being closed to the virus, some of it was due to a change in management that happened around the same time. Our catering director was furloughed because they had laid off all administrative staff at the start of the virus, which made sense as to why we didn't hear any updates for a while, and we didn't want to bother them since we figured they were overwhelmed. Three months into quarantine and having not made additional payments but also not having picked our menu, which we were supposed to do around this time, we got a notice in the mail that the venue had declared bankruptcy and that we could file a claim to get some of our deposit back. I have not heard from them since getting the bankruptcy letters, their phone numbers and email addresses are all deactivated. It is one of the reasons we had to postpone, but it stinks because we really did like that place and our catering director, the management just handled this whole virus and communication with clients very poorly.

It sucks that you guys are also going through this, are you just planning to move forward with the wedding in a month?

Oh my gosh, I’m sorry that sounds super stressful! I have been hearing some stories about bankrupt venues but they’re still few and far between. I feel like those stories will be increasing though. We got married on our original date and are choosing not to do anything with this venue because they are impossible to work with and have verbally told us they’re going our of business, whether thats true or not we dont want to give them more money. So we are pursuing the refund instead. It’s just turned into such a nightmare

Yes, definitely good call to cut your losses and take whatever refund you can get. With all the other horror stories of vendors/venues not issuing refunds, just cut them loose and choose another venue if you still want to have a reception. That way you can potentially postpone to a later date, if your vendors are also okay with it.

That's awful!! Our venue allowed us to reschedule once, at no extra charge, but when we went to reschedule again (not their fault, I know), they refused and told us we had to have it on that (second) date, or we'd lose everything we paid. Once I explained that the groom works for the DoD, and there are serious travel restrictions, along with the ban of him, or anyone in his immediate household being in a room with more than 10 people, the venue backed down. I understand why they tried to refuse, but we Truly appreciated it when they gave us our total refund. We still plan on having our wedding party there, but not until it's safe (and legal!) again. 🤞🙏 You may need to call some sort of legal counsel in- your venue sounds like they're trying to pull some shady stuff! Good luck!!!
