Venue concerns

Emily, on March 19, 2020 at 1:53 AM Posted in Planning 0 3
Hey all, first I want to express how sorry I am to all the brides and grooms who’s weddings have to be canceled or postponed. My heart hurts for you.
I am fortunate enough that my date is in October. However, yesterday, my friend who works at our venue was just terminated permanently along with all other staff members besides one. My venue has locations in several states and they let go all but one employee from each location. My friend thinks this means they might be going under although they are extremely successful, have had multiple celebrity weddings, and are always booked. The one remaining employee is my coordinator. She said that she is the only employee left while they wait out the corona virus but none of this makes sense to me. They permanently terminated even their hourly staff that helps during events. Why wouldn’t they keep them on staff if they don’t have to pay them right now anyway? When they resume events in 8 or so weeks they’re going to have to scout and hire a lot of staff in a short amount of time. This is all super concerning. My question is, has anyone else’s venue done something similar? I’ve heard of a couple coffee shops and restaurants laying off their employees as well so maybe there is a reason for this and it doesn’t mean they’re going under? My coordinator acted like I had nothing to worry about but I know from my friend that they are supposed to be saying that to clients. My date is 10/10/2020 and there are no venues left in town so if my venue goes bankrupt then I’ll be left to change my whole wedding as well. Anyway, thinking of everyone affected by this bizarre and sad time. I live in Nashville so we got hit by the tornado and then this right after. Let’s hit the 2020 restart button, yeah?

Unfortunately if you are permanently terminated then you cannot clam unemployment in some states. Some places of employment are doing this because they cannot afford to pay for a staff members unemployment checks during this current time. With all the steps that our government is taking right now I truly believe that all this will be over in a month of two. China has been going back to someone normal lives within a month of lockdown. Since we jumped so quickly on shutting down schools and businesses there is great hope!

Ah, okay this makes sense! I feel bad for all the employees that can’t file now and are out of work but honestly, that makes me feel a little better. I assumed that meant that the business wasn’t going to survive but what your saying makes sense. I didn’t realize you couldn’t claim if you were permanently terminated. That’s interesting! Thank you so much for this insight!

Hey Emily, have you heard any updates from your venue? This might be a short term reaction to deal with the lack of cash flow resulting from COVID cancellations, many vendors are small businesses and are being hit very severely by things. Unfortunately, you may need to wait and see, but I'd reach out to your venue periodically for their updates.
