Venue advice, I'm freaking out

Alexis, on March 9, 2020 at 5:36 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

Hi all, recently my fiance and I put a small deposit down on a venue. The venue is in the process of becoming a venue so it's a little odd currently as they're still doing renovations on it. This past weekend we went back to the venue for a tasting with the possible caterer (we definitely aren't going with that caterer which is fine) but I'm having second thoughts on the venue I'm suddenly terrified it won't come together and our wedding won't look how I imagined. I don't know if I'm overthinking its the wedding isn't until 2022 so there is more than enough time to change our minds. Honestly what would you do? Stay and wait to see what happens or just find somewhere else?

I would make sure that your contract gives you an out of some kind if they don’t meet their commit. I saw recently on here where someone booked this beautiful venue then they started construction in the area she was going to get married in and didn’t tell her. For me I would want a lot more detail and commitment documented before I went with a place that is just starting up. Maybe find out when they plan to be done and check in along the way and commit as it gets closer.

We have it in the contract that if the changes weren't done we would be refunded the deposit. They have started some of the changes already and I was told the ceremony area (where most of the changes need to be made) will be done by summer.

I think the previous poster wants you to be sure you actually can get out of your contract before you make any further decisions. From what you just said, are you sure you can? Sounds like you may only be off the hook if they don’t complete the changes which they have a long time to do...

    Edited to Say:

Speaking as someone who changed her mind less than a month after signing her venue contract with 20 months until her wedding...that contract may bite you in the butt. It took A LOT of effort to get me out of mine. But if you need/want help and it comes to that, message me. I used to be in the industry and know some tips if it becomes that difficult.

Since your wedding is in 2022, I would wait until summer to see how renovations are coming along. And in the meantime, also maybe do more research on other venues?

Hi kelsi, i just looked over the contract again and it says “ If renter decides to cancel the event or wedding 120 days prior to the scheduled date, renter is entitled to refund of any money paid above and beyond deposits paid in advance for venue and services.“ we booked for March 5, 2022. I’m glad I’m not the only one who changed/changed their mind a lot. When we went back there it just didn’t feel the same and i started panicking over everything looking awful and regretting it

I get it! Trust me. I thought I knew EVERYTHING I wanted and then planning started and I felt like I was going crazy! And I had been a professional wedding planner for years prior. I would start by addressing your concerns with your venue before you make any decisions, heck, even try negotiating a better price! My concerns were things we could NOT move on from. There were large windows that overlooked the parking lot, making for an awkward view during our ceremony. We definitely didn't have 300+ people to invite where we would meet the food/beverage minimum, etc. IF they can work with you, I would consider staying.
