Venting About Selecting Bouquets

Jen, on September 27, 2021 at 12:19 PM Posted in Planning 1 14

Hello WeddingWire friends,

I need a minute to vent. I have next to no experience with flowers. We're trying to find just bridal bouquet, bridesmaids bouquets, wrist corsages, boutonnières, and some flowers for our cake. No decor.

And I would never have thought of myself as picky about flowers, but I must be because I have spent hours upon hours, day after day, looking through Pinterest and Instagram and Google image search and I feel like my eyes are going to fall out and I still only have a couple pictures of what I like!

90% of what I see seems to be pure white, completely pastel, vintage, single color roses, or super boho - none of which is my style. Show me color! Some variety! Something traditional and romantic that isn't monochrome!!!

I tried talking to florists and they don't want to meet in person, they don't have real flowers in their studio (except for whatever wedding is immediately taking place), and they shut me down when I suggest meeting telling me to go back to Pinterest /cry.

The whole process has become miserable for me and just makes me feel drained and sad. I can't stand staring at any more pictures of digital flowers - I am so sick to death of it. I've tried going to grocery stores and flower shops, but there's just a tiny amount on display (again, pretty much all one color).

Is anyone else experiencing this frustration?

I feel you! Pinterest can skew unrealistic and/or older photos in my opinion, so I followed a bunch of florists in the area on Instagram. Most of them are very active and post stories and photos of weddings as they do them, and I liked those “real” photos way better than Pinterest. It made it easier to see their style. Maybe try researching them and following, and seeing if any grab you!

Thanks, that’s a great idea! I’ll try peeking specifically at the local florist instagrams and see if it sparks

Try changing up your Pinterest searches or as PP suggested try Instagram. It’s not unusual for a florist not to meet in person, especially if only doing bouquets and it’s also common for them not to have a stock of live flowers to show you. Search tons of pictures, reviews, have some phone calls and trust your gut.

Thanks; I wasn't sure if this was normal or not.

Yeah it’s hard because they’re live plants and once they’re cut they have such a short life. You can go to a local florist to simply browse flowers but I would also focus on what is in season at the time of your wedding. Not all flowers are available during the same seasons and there have been flower shortages making some unavailable or very expensive.

Oops- I deleted my comment after re-reading you just want corsages and bouttenieres only. Please disregard my photo. Corsages can be a single flower or a cluster of 2-3 smaller flowers. You can pick colored roses to colored orchids. It's possible others chose neutral to match whatever dress their mothers or ladies were wearing. Male bouts tend to be simple in structure and color. My groom wanted chocolate orchids for our tropical mood. Is there a botanical garden you can walk through for inspiration? I also suggest reading flower articles on brides.com for seasonal. best wishes.

What color do you like? Have you searched for specific color bouquets?

Definitely browse fiftyflowers.com for ideas. Since you are talking to florists, it sounds like you are not interested in artificial flowers so scratch that off the list.

One of my friends in the floral industry shared that there's a shortage. So don't feel like they're trying to give you the runaround. My friend says stock is low and shipping is delayed.

So some of the blooms you're craving might not be in your actual sight until closer to your date.

A friend sent me a bouquet from Urban Stems and it brightened my week. If you need a break from digital flowers, something like that could give you ideas and a bit of tactile relief.

Thanks, I wonder if the shortage will still be going into next year, too

Oh yeah. I have a general idea of fall colors, floral hoop bouquets, flowers in lanterns, and fairy lights, but that’s about it. My florist was awesome and helped walk me through a crayola amount of ideas and flowers. My suggestion is to ask why you like the flowers and designs that you do and dislike the others. Ex: I personally hate flowers with large centers like sunflowers so I know to stay away from flowers like that.

Next focus on the colors. I pretty much just typed into google orange fall flowers and went from there. It’s annoying and frustrating, but you got this beautiful!!!
