Vendor search issues

Pardon me if this is the wrong place for this post.. but is anyone else having issues with the vendor search tool on WeddingWire?

I have had problems searching for vendors in my local area and having some vendors not show up - ones that I *know* have weddingwire profiles. When I search by business name, I find them (under the correct city too) but they wont show up when I do a search by location. This concerns me because I would like to see all vendors in my area, but it's only showing me a subset - and some are several states away.. It almost seems like they are "featured". Even refining by distance, I don't see some local vendors that I know have wedding wire profiles.

Any vendors reading this - do a search for your category in your city, state and see if you show up. I suspect this may be an issue for others.

@Sarah - hmmm ok so I found the jeweler you mentioned and they may have listed their location information incorrectly? When you click through to their website they are an Etsy shop based out of Massachusetts. I can have our support team reach out to them to confirm their location and that they are categorized correctly.

I'm looking into it more why Marmari is not showing up in your search - thank you for the specific examples, it helps a lot!

And thank you for responding! They are definitely located in Nanuet, NY... My fiance bought my engagement ring from them and they are awesome. I remember having a similar issue looking for florists and make up artists too. I think there might be a bigger issue with the search by location and distance refine tools.... Thank you so much for taking the time to read my posts!

Also, did you try searching my other example (Celia)?

ETA: You are looking at a different vendor... The website of the one I'm talking about is correct and not an etsy site.

Of course Sarah! I'm looking into all of your examples and checking with the appropriate teams!

Sorry I've been trying to respond quickly and might have been confusing - the Etsy vendor I mentioned is the one that was displaying in your results from Florida!

Since I no longer have a paid ad on WW, I don't show up unless someone looks for my business name (or clicks on my avatar). The categories that have a lot of vendors (such as Officiants in the Tampa area -- which is too big of an area) cut off at 4 pages.

@Nancy... I'm in a searching mood, so I checked. I searched Officiants in Sarasota, then narrowed by distance (10 mi) and sorted by vendor name. You are on the second line. But I've had similar issues with other vendors.... It sounds like they are on top of it though, judging from WWLynnie's quick responses.

Hi Sarah! I'm having our QA team check on your specific examples, but I was able to get some more general info.

WW limits the search results to 4 pages to provide our couples with a robust catalog of options without being overwhelming. Our data showed that almost no one ever clicked past page 4, and the search results are prioritized based on relevance to your search and filters - and also on the amount of information provided by the vendors. Advertisers, active vendor accounts, and accounts with reviews all get preference!

Hi WWLynnie! I suspected that was what was going on. The four page limit seems reasonable, however I think the problem may be that when you refine your search by distance, it only refines from the results on those 4 pages.

For example, if vendor X was only a few miles away from you, but would have been on page 6, they would be cut off from the first search. When you refine by distance, they still wouldn't show up because the tool will only show vendors from the first 4 pages that are within that distance.

It would be really helpful if a new search was initiated after the filters are selected. You could still limit those results to 4 pages.

Another idea (though more code intensive), is allowing a map search option. Many of the vendor pages already include a map. It would be helpful if you could switch to a "map view" for your search results.

This is all awesome feedback Sarah and I'm sending it to the right team! I'll check on the map suggestion...I'm pretty sure we had a map view at one point but got rid of it...I've been at WW too long through too many updates Smiley smile Can't keep them all straight!

Alrighty Sarah - I got some more info! In general it seems like the 10 mile filter is a little tough (and stricter than you may want to be using). We use google to power the distance mapping parts of our search, and when you enter a zip code or town google picks an exact point in that town or zip to measure the distance from - this can be tricky with both towns and zip codes! Our tech team highly recommends widening it up a little bit with the 25 mile filter Smiley smile

I also found out why Marmari is not showing up in the catalog search, We've recently implemented a content threshold that all vendors have to meet in order to show up in the catalog results (you can still search for them by business name). All vendors were emailed (several times) about this change and what minimum information they needed to provide. This is all so we can improve the search experience for our users!

Okay, that makes some sense. Thank you for being so responsive and clearing this up for us!

ETA: For my own knowledge, what exactly is that content threshold? Maybe it could be relaxed just a touch to provide us with more results.

I would cross check reviews with other websites. I remember someone posted on here awhile ago about their cake being messed up. The vendor contested the review and weddingwire asked for a contract. The user provided the contract, but then weddingwire responded that they didn't provide it in a timely manner or something ridiculous like that.

I have the same problem. I just did a search for my venue, even when filtered by distance (10 miles) 86 venues come up and they are all over 130 miles from me. But when I search by the name of my venue it is there. This is why I found all my vendors through Google and word of mouth. I find the vendor search to be useless unless you are located in a major city.

@Sarah - it's a combination of photos, reviews, and contact info! When you look through the search results on WW we want users to actually be able to have real information to work off of Smiley smile As a bride myself I'd go nuts when I found a vendor on a website but none of their contact info was listed. Drove me insane!

@Macy - If your review is disputed, the reviewer has 60 days to provide WW with the proper documentation (like a signed contract).

@Laura - I checked your venue and they literally only have reviews and information left by the couples who reviewed them. In addition to having a minimum amount of information, vendors also need to claim accounts and confirm their e-mail addresses if they want to be able to be active on WW, receive leads, etc. Just like you all have to confirm your e-mail address on the couples side!

So, even if a reviewer supplies a contract the review won't be reinstated? Why is there a time limit?

@Macy - I mean, the reviewer has two months to provide proof of something they either have or don't have Smiley smile There's only a time limit because otherwise no review dispute cases would ever be closed. Otherwise our dispute team would be sitting on thousands of open cases forever!
