Velvet Bridesmaid Dresses in July?

Jessica, on November 16, 2021 at 1:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

Hi everyone! I absolutely LOVE velvet bridesmaid dresses especially the ones from Revelry. The problem is, my wedding is in July and the ceremony is outside. I would like for my bridesmaids to wear a mix of fabrics (velvet, satin, tulle, etc.) I just don't know if it will look tacky because of the summer heat. Some of my bridesmaids said that they would wear velvet and that they don't mind, but I don't want it to look weird. What do you all think?

I definitely associate velvet with like Fall/Winter and thinking about wearing that in the Summer makes me sweat lol even satin like satin and heat and sweat don't mix at all but ultimately it is up to you!

I wouldn’t worry about it looking inappropriate (trying to find a better word than “tacky” which is seen as largely offensive and hurtful). But be aware velvet is hot and doesn’t breathe. There is a reason it is worn in cooler months to keep warm. While it is pretty, it is not comfortable in heat. Sometime depending on body chemistry, even the lightweight fabrics are not enough to be comfortable in hot weather, even 5 minutes outside, regardless of shade vs full sun.

I wouldn't worry so much about what it will look like, but more about how HOT that will be for an outdoor July wedding. You don't want your bridesmaids covered in sweat and dying of heat!

I agree with everyone else that's it's not about the looks, but about consideration for your bridesmaids' comfort.

People worry a lot about whether a particular attire color is seasonally appropriate, and I don't think it's ever so much about the color, but about the fabric and style, whether it works for winter vs. summer. Velvet is a winter fabric for a reason.

I wore a velvet midi dress with spaghetti straps the day before my sister's wedding - it was over 35C (95f) and it was fine. I think... it depends on the type of velvet. Sometimes it can feel quite cold and slinky on the skin, so I don't really think they're likely to get overheated necessarily, but it would depend on the style of the dress and whether it has sleeves etc. I also think that if it's in darker colours it will look more wintery, and if in soft pastels, probably less so.
