Veils cleaning?

Sarah, on July 2, 2018 at 12:08 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9
I have a long cathedral length veil!! I’m in love with it but it is getting very wrinkled from being folded and stored. Do I take it to the dry cleaners? I’ve been advised to steam it before the big day but I don’t have or know anyone with a steamer and I don’t want to reuin it by trying to fix it myself! So do the dry cleaners do that?

You can definitely take it to your dry cleaners that you 100% trust.

You can also steam by letting it sit in your bathroom with the shower running and letting that steam it. I have a certain dress for work that wrinkles easily and on the days I wear it I hang it up in the bathroom while I shower to de wrinkle it since I can't put it in our dryer, but if that worries you you can definitely take it to a trusted cleaners

I purchased a steamer from Amazon that is handheld that I will use. We have the same length veil. I will probably do one passover on Wednesday and take one of my FI pant hangers with the double hoop and loop it through. Then on Friday night at the hotel, take it back out the bag and steam again and again until its just right.

I personally do not trust my local dry cleaners. I rather it a little wrinkly than ruined.

I was wondering how many days in advance I should!! I’ve honestly never taken anything to the dry cleaners before! Also if I were to steam it a few days before I’d probably do it again the night before or morning of too! I might even steam it the night before then leave it spread/laid out at the church in the bridal room. How much did it cost for the steamer you got off of amazon?!

Thats exactly what my plan was, steam and leave out once I get settled.

It was $20. This was it - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077XSCT4P/ref=od_aui_detailpages02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Granted, i haven't tried it, but I have some faith based on the reviews.

A steamer is just an iron where the inside heater for the water is very hot to make steam, but the surface gets very warm, never hot enough to melt or burn fine fabrics, lace or netting. So in a pinch you can place a towel or pillowcase or random thick fabric of cotton. on top of a surface, like over an ironing board, or a bed on top of sheets. Then spread a section of veil , then a cloth on top. use a steam iron set on wool, Steam goes through the top fabric, but veil only gets warm, is never touched by the hot iron. A PITA to slowly do section by section, smooth veil before covering it, but no special steamer needed, and you can do it last minute in a hotel room if you brought an iron. I often steam things in the bathroom with the shower running. But an old costumer and gown maker taught me once, that is only the first step. When the garment or veil is slightly damp everywhere, then hang it in a dry place with a fan or cool hair dryer in it. The moisture is absorbed by the fibers and they relax. Cannot hold the wrinkle crease. And the rippling motion of the air wiggles fibers back and forth until they settle into the arrangement across and down that fabric had when newly woven. The blow dry also ensures the item is totally dry before being stored under plastic or in a dark closet. No musty smell from tiny growths of mildew in damp or dark place.

Sorry I didn't see this sooner, no I would not iron it on my own, I'd use a trusted dry cleaner or tailor to do it. I hope all goes well 💗
