Veil Over or Under the Bun?

Kelly, on February 1, 2018 at 12:55 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 29

Hi, I have a cathedral veil that my future mother-in-law has asked me to wear. It's the same one she wore nearly 50 years ago for her own wedding. Now the question is, how to wear it? Normally, I wouldn't have picked a cathedral veil but this is a really special request. I am getting really excited about it, but would you wear it over the bun or under?

Under the bun. I think over the bun is dated.

I had two friends wear cathedral veils and they both went over the bun. They both looked gorgeous! If I were you I would try and recreate a similar bun placement to where you'll have it the day of and try it both ways. See which one you like better.

I disagree, under the bun is very dated looking and even when it was popular 20 years ago looked weird

It is your wedding wear it the way you like best. I agree with the earlier poster, try both and decide.

I think if it’s a high bun it should be worn under it, but a low but in should be worn over it. Not sure why I junk that way, I just do!

I did a bun, and tried my veil under and i wasn’t comfortable with how much my bun moved when I took my veil out. Like when I lifted the veil comb out i had to sort of lift my bun up to get it out which losened and shifted the bun. But over with my veil didn’t work either. It could have just been the comb on my veil. I think it was too big in the first place. I would definitely see if you can try it with a trail or on you’re own and see which way you like better.

I prefer over a low bun. Over a high bun looks very 80s/90s to me. Under the bun is a style that just never appealed to me. I always they look a little off.

Good lord, apparently I can’t put a sentence together before coffee. That was supposed to say “I always think they look a little off.”

It’s all a personal preference. Try both and decide which one feels more like you.

    I agree with this!

OP - It depends on the style of the bun for me too. If you are wearing a higher updo, I think having the veil over it could look a bit odd. But if you have a low updo, you can't really wear the veil under it, so the veil would go over.

I vote over the bun, then you can remove it for the reception to show off your hairdo.

I think it depends on your bun placement. If youre doing a lower bun (which is more in style) you can do either under or over! Thats so special that she wants you to wear her veil!

I am having a low bun and cathedral veil and I am deciding to wear it over. I tried under and it wasn't very comfortable to me. Also my mom and my aunt said it looked a little weird to wear it under. So I think I am going to wear it over but it is totally up to you!

I personally hate the way under the bun looks. But this is 100% personal preference - so maybe at your hair trial ask the stylist to attach it both ways, take a pic of each and then compare to see which you like better and make a final decision for your big day.

I second this! I have a chapel veil that I’ll be wearing over my high bun, but it’s because I have a blusher. Personally, I feel more bridal and formal with it over, but it’s totally your preference!

I found both over and under pictures, and I vote over. It all depends on if its a low bun, high bun, side bun, small bun, big bun, and hair jewelry, but with the pictures I found I vote over.

The very first picture is an over the bun application. Only the second of the four shows the veil under

Oops. now that I look at it your right it is over. It came up on google attached with the other picture. Probably counted as "under" because of the way it is tucked.
