Vegan guests?

Cassi, on June 19, 2019 at 9:34 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18

So we have a guest list of about 105. We have one groomsmen that is completely vegan. We did a prettuy simple menu to match our style. FH and I love taco tuesdays so we took that and our outdoor barn theme and went with a relaxed vibe for food vs a plated meal. We are doing a Tasco Bar, Fajita Bar and Donut Bar for dessert. This groomsmen is our only dietary restriction and food vendor hasn't mentioned anything about whether we could accomodate this or not? I'm not sure what to do? Here is whats included for our bars. Any and all advice is much appreciated. What would you suggest to keep the theme so he doesn't feel left out?

TACOS

Spicy Ground Beef Taco meat

FAJITAS

Marinated &Grilled Chicken with green peppers and onions

SIDE ITEMS

Mexican Rice and Refried Beans

TOPPINGS

Guacamole, Sour Cream, Cheese, Lettuce, Tomatoes and Jalapenos

Donut Bar

Plain Donuts

Chocolate, Vanilla and Caramel Icings

Fruity pebbles, Butterfingers, M&Ms, Cinnamon Sugar, Sprinkles and Chocolate chip toppings

Peanut Butter, Chocolate Espresso and Marshmallow sauces

Have you asked your vendor directly on whether or not they can accommodate? Our vendor when asked was more than happy to accommodate any/all restrictions our guests had (which is a lot!) Sometimes you just have to ask

Will the peppers and onions be separate for the fajitas? Are the rice and beans made vegan friendly? I’d ask these questions of your caterer as they’ll know best what they can or can’t accommodate.

I'd definitely recommend asking your vendor because they might be able to make a one-person-portion of vegan friendly food, but I also think your menu might not far off from being vegan friendly, or at the very least, some of the toppings and tortillas are probably safe (I'm not vegan, so I'm not positive), and depending on how the beans are cooked, they could be ok too. So he might just need a small portion of a protein to make a decent meal.

Caterers usually have “silent option” for vegetarian / vegan guests. They could make just one plate for him. Ask your caterer about this. Some of your food items can already be used: peppers, onions (if separate from chicken), lettuce & tomato (veggies), rice (carbs), beans (protein) & guacamole (fat) - so you pretty much have complete meal. I’d ask caterer to add some additional items for his plate, like cubed tofu (instead of cheese).

Best to just let the catering vendor know that you have one complete vegan. Ask them if they can accommodate it and what options they have for him.

Asking your vendor would be the first step. We have a couple vegan guests and that's what I did

    Definitely ask the vendors.
I am also doing tacos and fajitas but I am doing make your own so my guests with different diets and restrictions can make what works for them, it also works for picky eaters.
See what the vendor says, maybe lol into make your own tacos.

This is what i was hoping. I asked my caterer and they just haven't gotten back to me besides saying "we will figure it out" which doesn't sound very assuring.. lol.

Our caterer did a “silent option” for vegetarians. Options on the menu were chicken and steak but we let them know in advance that we had 5 vegetarians so they had 5 vegetarian meals prepped as well for those guests, even though it wasn’t listed as an option.

Since these are set up as "bars," can't the one groomsmen just make his tacos and such without the meat? For example, a pepper and onion fajita with all the toppings and sides (no meat)? Or make himself a taco salad. Looks like you have all the ingredients needed.

Well the peppers and onions are with the chicken. I would think he would be able to make a separate thing because they are set up as bars and what not but wanted to get opinions of other people maybe going through something similar. I just don't want him left out obviously and wasn't sure if he could even eat the refried beans and what not (not vegan but I know they have strict rules even preparation wise).

Gotcha. I am not sure, I'm not vegan either so I don't know. You're already doing a lot better / being more considerate than me. For our menu, I picked out a simple country meal and stuck to the saying "you get what you get, so don't throw a fit." Smiley xd

First off I want to say that your food sounds so cool and good
And second, I'm not sure how it'll work out but I'd like to think if you requested specifically a vegan meal for the guest then the caterer could accommodate such.
    I hope it works out
    Your food sounds so fun!!!!

If he’s vegan he can have the toppings, the rice, the beans so long as they make them with no meat byproducts. I would start off with asking the vendor how they prepare these things. If they can’t accommodate him I’d opt to get him a personalized meal and dessert from else where and ask the vendor to serve it since they personally can’t do it. I’ve found with caterers if they personally couldn’t do something they were willing to work with another person who could do the accommodations

Awe thanks! We wanted to go simple. We could not agree on a plated meal. His family is all super southern and would want BBQ or fried chicken and mashed potatoes where my family would rather have pastas and baked chicken or pork tenderloin or something like that. not to mention FH is a SUPER picky eater himself. We love tacos and donuts so when we stumbled across this option we were thrilled. Yeah hopefully she gets back to me and lets me know for sure.

Very valid! Haha my guess is vegan is a lot harder to accommodate compared to vegetarian or allergies, maybe she just needs time to figure out what she can do?
