Using a friend as Officiant

Olivia, on August 27, 2019 at 7:35 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 11
Hi all,

We’ve finally agreed that we would like our friend to officiate our wedding, but I’m not sure if the best way to go about it. I know that there are online religious orgs that will certify someone, but this is going to be a non-denominational wedding.

I’d also heard that some cities can temporarily allow civilians to act as something like a deputy clerk, but idk if we can do that. We’re getting married in Baltimore.

If anyone has advice or personal anecdotes, please share!

Just because your officiant is ordained by a religious organization doesn’t mean you have to have a religious ceremony! This article is useful:

I'm also getting married in Baltimore and having a friend officiate. You need to get them certified as a "minister" but that doesn't mean that the ceremony has to be religious.

We had a friend get ordained by a church online, but our ceremony was completely non-religious! It just is a “religious” ceremony for the marriage license! It was super easy, and he did an amazing job!

Also live in Baltimore. Our friend got officiated online with Universal Life Church. We are writing the whole ceremony, nothing religious at all. All the friend has to do is sign the marriage license with their name, address, and the organization they are ordained with. It’s pretty easy.

Hey fellow MD bride! A friend of ours is also getting ordained with the ULC for our non-denominational ceremony. Check with Baltimore City/County to see what their requirements are first for a civilian to become ordained.

My best friend is ordained and she told us whatever we want and however we want it, if we want religious she'll do it if we want non religious she'll do that as well, it's your choice
