ushers, groomsman....any difference?

MariaPaz, on May 24, 2017 at 10:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

Hi all;

So we decided our wedding party a while back, we will have 5 bridesmaids and 5 groomsman, however, I have another very especial friend (male) that I really want him in the wedding party, but I don't have another female to be a bridesmaid so I was thinking to make him an usher. now my questions is, how would he walk down the isle? by himself? what would be his job? There are no dads in my wedding so my mom will walk me down the isle.

Any suggestions? I never thought about having an usher, maybe if I have 2 ushers he won't be a loner?

Help please

I think an usher hands out programs (if you're doing that) and escorts people to their seats?

I've never seen the point. It's an honor that requires to do a chore in my opinion.

What if you honored him by asking him to do a reading?

Ushers generally escort ppl to their seats. They dont just walk down the aisle.

I had someone drop out last minute in my first wedding, we just doubled up one set and made them a group of 3 walking down. I feel like adding him as an usher might be a little bit of a slap in the face if you wanted him to be a GM. It can be odd, its not a big deal on that.

Have an uneven number of groomsmen and bridesmaids.

I always thought about making him one of the groomsman but we didn't have another bridesmaid for him, so the best option was for him to be an usher, because he could be part of the wedding party, be in the pictures, etc.

Can it be possible to have uneven groomsman and bridesmaids? I have never seen that in any wedding I have been to. plus, he would be the only one, unless I add another guy...

(too many guys, not many women ...lol)

As an usher he would just walk people to their seats and show people where to sit. Can he do a reading instead? It's also okay to have uneven sides.

Also I've never seen an usher be in pictures unless they are also GM's.

    1) yes, you can have uneven sides.

    2) shouldn't your FH decide his groomsmen? Is this person a friend to both of you?

He is a friend of both, but he can't be a reader because he is a special need young adult!! The most sweet person I have ever met!! Pure innocence and we both want him to be in our wedding party! It just hard to think he could walk alone ... I would have to figure it out how I would do the walking

Ushers typically just seat your guests. They are not listed as part of the wedding party and are not in pictures. If you want this person to participate in those aspects, you'll have to make him a groomsman.

We have 5 groomsmen and 5 bridesmaids as well and we are having my two younger brothers be ushers!! this is how we are doing it:

    - they will help direct people to their seats before the ceremony begins

    - they will be walking my FH down the aisle and will also be standing up with the groomsmen

    - at the reception, they will help people find their escort cards, along with showing people where they put cards/gifts, etc.

ETA: you could also have 2 groomsmen walk down 1 bridesmaid, she could have one on each arm!! i've been to a few weddings that did this... doesn't look weird at all... actually makes for some very special pictures Smiley smile
