us residents getting married in Ireland - questions

Elizabeth, on July 8, 2022 at 1:22 PM Posted in Planning 0 8
I know our wedding will be legal in Ireland. Do we need to do anything with our marriage certificate when we get back home to the US (CA)?

After the wedding our officiant and my husband and I and our witnesses signed and then mailed in the document. After 2 weeks I contacted them to receive the official paper document. Then I waited for it to be mailed to me. Not sure how it will work in another country though, good luck Smiley smile

I'd give your local court clerk a call to ask whether there are any specifics you'd need to follow. I'm not sure about CA specifically, but I'd imagine as long as you get the license within the required window of time, have it signed by everyone they need to have sign, and mail it back that it should be fine.

Google said to contact our state attorney general but I am having difficulty getting to anyone that isn’t in the criminal department.
I would assume that it’s legal everywhere without needing to submit any paperwork to CA other than what’s required for name change (which I will be getting multiple copies of the marriage certificate from the registrar before we leave Ireland) but I don’t would like to confirm rather than just assume. This is stressful 😵‍💫

Have you tried your County Clerk Recorder's office?

Yeah anything legal tends to be super stressful (and that's coming from a lawyer lol). I'd imagine your local superior court clerk would be able to help you out though. They're usually the ones who deal with any kind of legalities around getting married. I'd guess the most you'd have to do would be to get a CA marriage license and meet whatever requirements they'd need, but I'm not sure how reciprocity would work with Ireland and the US/ CA.

So I would definitely call your local county Recorder/Registrars office (whoever issues marriage licenses for the county). I just went to Ventura County’s site (where I got married in 2020) and it clearly states you “can get married anywhere in California” which insinuates that anywhere outside California is NOT going to be valid. You may need to get “legally married” either before or after your full wedding in Ireland. Again, call your local county office not the Attorney Generals office. Good luck.

Sorry I should have clarified that using a California marriage license can only be used within the state. Sorry for being confusing!
