Upstate ny August 22, 2020 - postpone?

Kailey, on May 12, 2020 at 8:03 PM Posted in New York Planning 0 8
Hi all. We have an August 22,2020 wedding planned with 250 guests at our home. We’ve gone back and forth about postponing. Some businesses in our area can open Friday with many stipulations, masks, social distancing, etc. I’m afraid social distancing will still be in effect in August and we don’t want to cut anyone out. Has anyone else in this area postponed to 2021? All my vendors are almost booked for 2021 so I hate to wait to make a decision but don’t know what to do.

We are holding ours in the Capital Region of NY in October. Making a plan B, C and D, but ultimately waiting to see what the full phased plan is. I do also worry 2021 will not be much different.

I just postponed my upstate NY (Capital Region) 8/8 wedding to July 17, 2021. My venue coordinator suggested it---the restaurant portion of the venue should be open, but with 200 guests he said it would probably still be limited. It might not be a bad idea to reconsider...Smiley sad I feel your pain

I am an Upstate NY bride too and I postponed to next June (was originally 6/20/2020 then late August). 250 is a lot of people at once and my planner told me that even if places are "opening," that doesn't mean the wedding will look anything like pre-COVID 19. In some cases, even if the venue is at your home, you have to track who comes in and report it back to the health department in case there happens to be an outbreak. My planner told me that guests would have to wear masks and there would be other rules in place that would just take all the fun out of it. At that point, if it is not the wedding you originally had in mind, then it's not worth it. Once I postponed, I felt so relieved and all of our vendors were available on the same day. I would guess not all of yours are fully booked, they might just not have Saturdays open so in that case, think about doing a Friday wedding or using a holiday weekend. You might have to lose a vendor or two but in my opinion it's not worth the What Ifs for the next few months. With the state NY is in, odds are you will have to postpone or make drastic changes by the time August rolls around. Good luck!

Hi Kailey! I am also an Upstate NY bride getting married in August. Our venue has postponed all weddings through the end of July at this point. They won’t discuss postponement with August couples until after the governor speaks on Friday. They are waiting to hear what he says about allowable group sizes once non-essentials start to re-open. Our guest list is around 175, and we’re expecting they will allow group sizes of 100 or less. I am mentally prepared to postpone until next summer at this point. I have four elderly grandparents, and it would be devastating if they couldn’t attend to our wedding safely. I have a friend who is getting married in July locally. She cut her guest list from 160 to 80 because they want to get married on their original date. I do expect that venues will be taking a lot of extra safety precautions once people are allowed to gather. Best of luck with your decision making! We’re all in this together. 🙂

That’s what I’m worried about is having to track everyone and that everyone would be in masks, so I’m leaning towards postponing too. I’m sorry you had to postpone, but the relief is a plus! As much as I’m stressing right now, I think I’ll be pretty relieved too if we postpone!!

I’d definitely be curious to hear what your venue decides after tomorrow! We are getting married at home so I don’t have any guidance from a venue or coordinator, but I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you can have your day with no limitations at your venue!!
