Uplighting

Deidra, on November 6, 2020 at 12:39 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10

My DJ's uplighting fee is $500. My venue is tiny & my guest list is only 50 people. I hesitate to pay that much, but know you get what you pay for. Has anyone done any DIY uplighting with maybe Christmas lights around the perimeter of the room?

Can you negotiate on the price? While I am all for DIY there are some things I personally wouldn't do because you won't get the same look as a pro, and supplies and your time/labor will be more expensive than it costs to pay them.

We (MIL to be & DJ) are going to the venue in about 2 weeks. He's bringing an uplighting light fixture to show me what it'd look like. I'm budgeting as if I'm going to pay this extra $500. I have until August 2021 (I think) to pay in full, so that's how long I have to make my choice.

But the sooner I figure out that's what I'm doing or not, the sooner I can spend the extra $500 on something else.

I would wait to make a decision until you see how it looks in 2 weeks when you visit the venue. You might decide you love it and think it's worth the extra cash, or you might actually dislike it. One thing you could try to do is negotiate with the DJ to see if he's willing to lower the price a bit for the lighting. Or you can ask if there are other lighting options available through your DJ. Are there string lights that he'd be willing to hang up instead of uplighting?

I'm only paying his deposit for now. I plan on bringing one of my own lit decorations to see how we like it around places. I'll have to ask what other lightings he offers, you're right. I know one was "pin lighting" which we decided we didn't want.

Check out rentmywedding.com. They might be a lot cheaper. They shop the lights to you and you ship it back after the wedding. They have been great to work with!

I don't know where you live so prices will differ, I live in Colorado and paying my dj 950 and that includes up lighting. I think you should wait to see what it looks like while it looks nice not needed to have a nice wedding, I would look up pros and cons of up lighting, if your venue is beautiful on the inside and your want to capture the beauty I wouldn't use it because it would take away from the beauty. however if it's just a space and you need to spiffy it up I would use it, also one more thing I would highly suggest not doing your own lighting because you are going to be so busy on your wedding day the last thing you will want to do is put up lights congrats on getting married

$500 for uplights is ridiculous! You can rent them from RentMyWedding (we did!). Only $25 per cordless light (free shipping both ways). Very easy set-up.

Or use those rates to negotiate with your DJ. He matches their price or you’ll rent them yourself. 😉

You can rent up lighting from a local rental place for about $250
