Updo for thin hair

Laura, on July 29, 2019 at 10:17 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 24
So my HMU trial is this Saturday. I’d like an updo since the wedding is on the beach and I don’t need my hair blowing all over.
But.
My hair is very thin and fine. Is an updo even possible? I’ve looked all over Pinterest and the “thin hair” pics there don’t look the least bit thin to me. I have some saved to show my stylist but I’m just not convinced they’re going to work for me. I looked at clip in extensions at Sally’s and they were insanely expensive. Really not looking to spend that much on top of everything else.
Help!

    Hey Laura,

Have you thought about maybe curling your hair and then pinning it up? It may not be a full updo, but your hair will appear more full. I hope I sort of helped!Smiley heart

I hadn’t thought about that. Mostly because my knowledge of fancy hairdos is less than my knowledge of special occasion makeup, which is to say, zero. My stylist and makeup artist are going to love me on Saturday! My makeup pins are all over the place with no obvious trend towards one certain look.
I’m a mess with this stuff!

Ah, I understand what you're saying. Hopefully once your stylist sees your hair, she'll get some inspiration on what hairstyle would look good for youSmiley heart

I have very thin hair and I ordered $20 clip ins from Amazon that had really good reviews and are also real hair so I can style it, dye it, and treat it just like I would my own hair, and with prime you get two day shipping

I also have fine, thin hair. When my HMUA did my hair at my trial, she told me the secret to getting the really voluminous look you see in Pinterest is to use a hairpiece. It is stuffed inside the hairdo and the rest of the hair is styled around it. She has these hairpieces with her and uses them as needed but she told me she gets them at places like Sally's and they're not expensive.

However, when she did my hair for my wedding we decided to forego using the hairpiece. Instead, she put a lot of product in my hair that added texture, then she curled it and teased it while she styled it in a messy updo with a side braid integrated into the style. She did a great job of giving my hair the volume I wanted but it did require a lot of curling, teasing, and at least 100 bobby pins!

I'm in the same boat as you, with my trial coming up in a week and a half. I'm definitely going with an updo though - my hair really doesn't hold curl well over time, and going half up-half down would just make it look finer. I've had enough prom and homecoming updos that I know it's possible to do (without extensions too), I'm just hoping my artist can nail a soft but still definitely-not-going-anywhere look haha

I may look into that. $29 I can live with. $135, not so much.

I never went to that stuff in high school. This will my first time getting my hair done professionally. I hope my stylist will hit that look too.

I also have very thin and fine hair. My wedding is still 11 months out but my FH recently had a formal we attended and my hairstylist put my hair in an updo and made it not even look like my hair it had so much more volume! This first picture is how the back of my hair normally looks vs how it did when she did the updo! She curled it first then used Bobby pins to put the hair up. She didn't use any hair pieces or extensions so in my opinion it should be totally possible for your natural hair to be put in an updo!

Mine is fine (though there's a lot of it) and my stylist did a LOT of back combing and curling and spray/mousse/product to get it to both the point at which it would stay and to make it look like there was more there. We went to a formal event a few months after the wedding and that stylist (in a different state, otherwise I would have used the same guy from the wedding) used a mesh "donut" which went under my hair and gave it volume.

Honestly, I would talk to your stylist before spending a lot of money - particularly on anything you can't return.

A textured updo should do the trick. Speak with your stylist as they’ll know what to do. You’re certainly not the first with this issue. There’s many of us out there with the same struggle.

Same! I don't wear extensions because my hair is a decent length but because it is so thin I can't do anything with it without it falling. I couldn't justify spending a lot on something I would probably never use again.

Curling it does add more volume, as PP suggested

I have very fine and thin hair. My hair is also short...barely touching my shoulders.

I'm having my hairstylist put my hair up in a french twist. It's really old school and a bit formal but I know that my hair doesn't hold curl and little piece always fall out whenever it's pinned.

I would definitely plan to talk with your stylist and see what he or she can do. Setting your hair wet, drying it, and then back combing usually does a lot with regards to volume and texture.

I guess I’m just gonna leave it up to the stylist at this point. I’ll take my iPad to show her the styles I have pinned, then ask her to do hair stylist magic. That’s what she gets paid for, right?

Thank you! I will probably want to do something similar like this for my wedding. I'm getting married in June and my dress has an illusion back so if my stylist can repeat a similar updo I think it'd be perfect!

Talk to your stylist about this! I have thin and fine hair that doesn't hold much volume at all, although it is a little longer than usual which makes it look like more. At my trial, she teased the top a bit, used a volumizing foam/spray, and placed something called a hair donut inside the updo and pinned my hair around it (probably similar to what earias mentioned above). I could not believe how much volume there was!! I also had it in for about 8 hours and the volume didn't fall flat whatsoever.

Here are the photos of my trial:
