Updating marital status?

Neena, on September 5, 2019 at 4:21 PM Posted in Married Life 0 6
If I am keeping my maiden name after marriage, must I inform any institutions of the change in my marital status? If my husband and I will continue to file taxes separately, do I have to inform my HR department at work that I was married?

Maybe only if you are going to be on the same health insurance policy? Also I think you'll file your taxes married filing seperatly so not really sure...?

Not sure if you have to inform work. But you filing taxes will be different than filing single because you’ll have to file as married separate instead of married together.

It depends. Probably for things like emergency contacts, taxes, benefits and beneficiaries, unless you plan to be 100% separate in those things. Not so fun fact, the retirement plan my company chose requires MY SPOUSE'S signature if I want to designate anyone other than him as the 100% beneficiary. >Smiley sad

Anyway, so I'd ask, if nothing else.

    I'm figuring this out myself.

We both are going to change our W4s, and we will be changing over health insurances... but I don't think anything else changes?

Honestly, I'll follow this thread to find out.

I also kept my maiden name. My husband and I filed our taxes Married, and separate, which wasn't that big of a deal. I would recommend finding a good CPA or someone who can explain the differences of filing married, but separate VS. Married and together. Ours actually figured our taxes up both ways to let us see the differences on our returns and then we picked the best one for us. I still file Single with no exemptions on my W2 therefore the max is held out of my paycheck, to avoid having to pay anything around tax time. The only thing I did was included my husband on my insurance through my workplace. This was an easy process and all HR asked to see was a copy of our marriage certificate/license in order to add him as a beneficiary. If you aren't sure, you could always ask your HR department for information regarding getting married. Each company works a little bit different, but should be able to explain everything and answer all questions. Good Luck and I hope this helps!

Once you get married you have two options for filing taxes. Married or Married, but Separate. I strongly advise having a professional explain the differences to you before deciding which one you want to do. If it's your first time they may even file your taxes both ways to see the difference in your return so you can pick which one you prefer. I strongly advise anyone with student loans to consider filing married, but separate especially if you are on any forgiveness plans.
