UPDATE: My Invites Have Twine... Mailing?

Rayla, on February 20, 2017 at 9:49 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

I am almost ready to send out my DIY wedding invitations, but I'm feeling a little anxious about the twine that I tied around them. It's not very thick at all (it's just twine, after all), but I've heard horror stories of people's invitations being ruined in the machines because of ribbons, rhinestones, etc.

Has anyone successfully mailed invitations w/ twin through the mail? Did you have them hand cancelled? Do they even do hand canceling anymore?

Any advice or reassurance would be appreciated.

UPDATE:

Went to the post office today to have a final invitation weighed. The lady working there did that, and then handled the invitation a little to see if it was rigid. She asked about the bulge (caused by the twine), but when I told her it was twine she said it should go through the sorting machine fine. She said I can hand-cancel them as well! (I'm oddly excited about the Chapel Hill, NC postmark... Seems wedding appropriate.) Postage each: $0.49

Here is a close of the twine detail on our invites.

I have not, but when I took my invitations to get weighted for postage they specifically asked if they had any ribbon or twine. So I would take your invitations just to double check the price of the postage. I'm not sure if they were asking for any other reasons.

Take the invites to your local PO. Talk to the head honcho. They will likely have to be mailed there and stamped "HAND CANCEL" only.

Usually if letters aren't flat you have to pay extra postage.

Go to the Post Office and POLITELY ask what the postage would be.
