**UPDATE** Marriage Certificate

JerseyGirl, on May 27, 2017 at 3:00 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

Update- so I spoke to the courthouse today. Our marriage license has three parts (officiant copy, original copy and duplicate copy). When we got our license the clerk told us to mail the original and keep the duplicate until we received our final. Apparently we were supposed to mail the duplicate and keep the original. So tomorrow out goes the duplicate. It would have been nice if they enclosed a note. If I had not followed up, our marriage certificate never would have been filed!

For married folks....we received our marriage certificate today, I think. What received from the court was our marriage license that the officiant filled out and sent in after our ceremony. It is stamped received on the back but that's it.

I do plan on calling Tuesday but just curious if perhaps this was an error or if that's all a marriage certificate really is.

Marriage certificate kind of resembles a birth certificate.

They're usually not very glam but that doesn't sound right either. Usually they don't look like your application; they look like typed up doc that is in a slightly different format. HOWEVER, I have one on my desk that is EXACTLY the same as what I file, with the exception of a watermark.

    I'd call. Keep us posted.

Mine looks like that - copy of marriage license with officiant info and signature filled out and it has a raised stamp on it.

I would call. My marriage certificate is just a copy with no raised seal. It just has our names, county and date. Like @Celia not glamorous at all.

@celia- I didn't think it seemed right. It is exactly what they handed us in the office when we applied. It's what the officiant signed and mailed in.

Will definitely call on Tuesday. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy.

@MJ- that's the other part that concerned me. There is no seal at all, raised or stamped.

I asked my partner Michael, who also does weddings in NJ, and he says he's seen them, but I think it's worth a call anyway.

In Florida: the top one-third of the page is the Marriage License Application (completed by the couple at the county courthouse); middle one-third of the page is the Marriage License (completed by the clerk at the county courthouse); bottom one-third of the page is the Marriage Certificate (completed by me and optionally signed by 2 witnesses). Couples get back a Certified Copy of the form.
