Unsympathetic Venue

Katelynn, on April 26, 2020 at 5:19 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 7
Help! My wedding isn't till 10/3/2020 in Michigan but my venue isn't working with me at all. I contacted them with my concerns which are the following: 1. Two pregnant bridemaids 2. One bridesmaid with leukemia 3. Several VIP guests that are at risk due to health and age that I refuse not to have at my wedding...including my father and 4. Half of my guests have to travel. I requested to postpone my wedding (my contact doesn't have a postponing clause) to the following year and gave a couple dates to see if they are available. They told me (very unsympatheticly) that I will have to cancel my current event which would cause me to lose 13k and rebook with another 3k down for a new date. They won't even let me put a soft hold on a new date or work with me at all. I'm so lost and devastated. Idk what to do, I just want to make sure I can keep my friends and family safe.. 😷

Wait what?! Do you have wedding insurance?

I might be wrong so you might want to look it up, but I thought that some of wedding insurance plans cover cancellation or wedding postponement due to anyone essential to the wedding being too ill to attend?

I unfortunately do not. I stupidly had no idea about it and now it's to late to get because nothing will cover Covid-19.

    Ugh that sounds awful.

At this point I would just wait and see what things look like closer to the date. October is still many months out, and your venue may be more accommodating as the date gets closer. If closer to your date there are legal restrictions on gatherings and they cannot provide the service you contracted them for, at that point they may have no choice but to allow you to reschedule. It's also possible that things will improve considerably by then, so if it's clear the only option you have is to forfeit a ton of money, I'd just wait longer before making a final decision.

Sorry you are having to go through this!

Are either of your pregnant bridesmaids from out of state? Will they be in their third trimester by that time? If so, aren’t you not allowed to fly by then?

Trying to brainstorm ways to get around not losing $13k haha

No, both pregnant bridemaids both live very close to the venue. One is due November and one December so they will be 3rd trimester I believe.

Ugh. If you wait to cancel a couple of months before the wedding, do you end up losing more that $13k? If the loss is still $13k if you cancel in September, then I agree with PP— I would wait it out and see if things get better or they’re forced to cancel. The only risk with this is handling the other vendors. Have you booked those yet? Will they let you postpone (if need be) without a fee?

I'm really hoping things either get better very quickly (I really doubt that tho) or we are still in a phase that won't allow them to hold my wedding. So they have to cancel on me. Unfortunately if I lose my 13k due to me canceling, I won't get a wedding. Which is definitely devastating. Thanks ladies.
