Super August 2022

Unsure

I found out last night that I have arthritis and bursitis in my knee. My dr has requested xrays and a low dose of a anti-inflammatory for it. I'm in so much pain right now, can't get my knee comfortable at all. My knee is also swollen. My dr mentioned that surgery is a possibility, because it's a knee that I initially injured years ago.

I'm in a wedding on Halloween. I mentioned my current situation to the bride, but she didn't ask anything about the pain. If the pain is too much, should I step down? Should I just suck it up?

No, I'm not trying to get out of the wedding. I'm just not sure what to do.

I don't think that you need to step down or suck it up. Are you asking if you should schedule the surgery (if needed) after the wedding, or do you mean suck it up because you'll have to stand at the altar? Obviously you should schedule the surgery whenever is convenient for you, but if it's just about standing, there are accommodations that can be made.

The wedding is still two and a half months away. Go to physical therapy (I’m a PT lol). They should help strengthen your muscles around the knee and help with the pain! Ice it every couple of hours for 15 minutes at a time.

I’m sorry you’re having this issue. I think you should try the treatment first and then see. I think you can still be part of the wedding and not wear heels. The bride would probably accommodate you and you can sit down during the ceremony. This is all an option as long as you don’t need to have surgery which or course would change it all.
I recommend you take collagen. I have an injured knee as well and I tend to get pain every here and then depending on the weather. I started taking collagen about 2 to 3 months ago and is being amazing! We are getting rain every day in south Florida and not once has my knee hurt. My family has arthritis history and I didn’t start the collagen because of my knee it was more of a stay young healthy thing but one of the benefits is in your bone. Give it a try!

My doctor doesn't know if the medication that he prescribed is going to help with the pain and swelling. He said if it doesn't work then I will be referred to a specialist. My doctor thinks that surgery is in the future but he just doesn't know how far into the future. As it is right now, I can't stand for more than 20 minutes. I don't know how long the ceremony will be. My friend is also wanting the bridal party to wear dressy shoes. I am really hoping for her to understand that I can't wear heels.

I don't want to step down.

I would have a chat with your friend. She shouldn't require you to wear uncomfortable shoes or stand longer than you're capable. There's nothing wrong with having a bridesmaid sit.

I sure hope so. I already informed my friend that I won't be able to stay for the after party (for family reasons. My children has school the next day). She said that was find as long as I stay for the reception. I am sure she will understand, but I know that day will be stressful for her.

Never thought of collagen. A friend mentioned glucosamine/chondroitin for the arthritis. I will definitely give it a try.

I spoke with her briefly this morning, but she just kept rambling and it was hard for me to say much. I texted her and told her that we needed to get together so we can about the shoes I wear for her ceremony. I have no problem wearing flats, but I can't do heels. I have Achille's tendinitis & plantar fascitis in my left foot (which she knows about) and arthritis in my right knee.

I am looking forward to being in her wedding.

Yes! Is natural and great for skin, anti-aging, hair and nails so is a extra plus. Get powder and at least 10g. Vital protein has the best unflavored collagen. Just add a scoop to your morning coffee, tea or shake and is the best!

I also suffer from knee pain and actually will be making an appointment to get checked out so I understand how painful it can be. I started taking ibuprofen to help with the inflammation and also starting using a Copperfit knee brace and it honestly makes a difference. I found it at CVS for only $10 but I'm sure they sell them online too. If your dress is long enough in the wedding you can actually just wear the Copperfit and it may help you.

The dress requirements is a long dress with sleeves and has to be black. Shoes have to be black or white. So it will definitely be long enough to hide a brace.

That would be perfect. I would say try and get one now and wear it whenever you start feeling pain to see how much it helps and that way the day of the wedding you'll be used to it. Good luck!

That is a good idea. Pay day is next week, I will get a brace next week.

I just had knee surgery a week ago (torn meniscus and torn cartilage) and I am pretty much back to normal.. walking fine with a slight limp and I just kept working on my range of motion starting the day after and so far so good.. go tomorrow for my 1 week post OP visit.. I know everyone is different but I also think it's the will to push through and work thru it.. Haha I don't want to have to do PT so I've been doing all the exercise he told me to do and will see how well I can move it tomorrow.. but I think its doable.. just stay focused..sorry this was so long winded...lol

The wedding is still a while away. You should be able to get some of the inflammation down by then, and hopefully will see the specialist who can help manage your symptoms. I wouldn’t cancel at this point, but I would let the bride know what’s going on. If the shoes are making it worse, she should be ok with you wearing something else. Honestly, no one will see your feet (or care what they look like) other than for those cutesy pictures of all the girls shoes together, so I wouldn’t think it should be a big deal. I also don’t see why you couldn’t sit down in the front row if needed during the ceremony instead of standing. She clearly wanted you in her wedding, so hopefully she’ll be understanding and work with you to keep you in it. Until then, try and stay off the leg as much as possible and follow the doctors orders! Hope you feel better!

If a brace is too bulky under your dress or you just want some other options, you could get some KT tape (about $10 a roll or pack at Walgreens/CVS) to help support your knee. I liked it in the summer, too, when braces get sweaty. And they DO get sweaty. I used KT tape when recovering from knee/ankle/foot surgeries, primarily for my knee. It helped until I gained a bit more strength and range of motion in physical therapy.

I think I did it in a U shape, starting below my knee and going up around it on either side. A different shape could work better for you!

YouTube has all sorts of videos on how to apply KT tape to knees.
