Unsure about alteration recommendation

Lindsey, on December 9, 2020 at 9:02 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12
My alterations are in February with David’s Bridal where I got my dress. When I picked up my dress someone from alterations came out and one of the things they suggested to do was add a thicker piece of string underneath the straps of the dress to make them more “sturdy” I guess? I really like the look of the dainty straps and I’m nervous about how it will look with thicker straps.

Obviously someone who works in alterations knows better than me, but I don’t feel like the straps aren’t strong enough & will break off. I wish I had better pictures because they look super thin & like they’re about to pop off in these pictures but in real life they don’t look or feel that way. But that’s definitely the last thing I want to happen on my wedding day so if whoever I meet with really recommends it I guess I’ll do it.. Plenty of women wear thin straps for their wedding without having wardrobe malfunctions. If it makes you feel better, buy some detachable straps and bring them on the wedding day just in case.

Yes, I would feel uneasy with super thin straps. Especially because I wear a DD/DDD.

I have the same bust size, I think that’s the main reason the lady recommended thicker straps. For some reason I don’t feel uneasy about them but maybe it’s because I just want the super dainty looking straps so badly lol!

Also, you could ask them to reinforce the stitching around the straps. If they’re going to break (they’re not,) that’s where it would be.

I went to a wedding where the bride had thin straps and the strap broke. She just changed into her travel dress earlier than expected and got back out on the dance floor.

I think Caytlyn has great suggestions! I’m sure the dress would be fine during the ceremony, but maybe the seamstress is worried about you raising your arms and moving around a lot while dancing. Reinforcing the straps would definitely help with that, and having detachable straps would be a great back up idea, just in case the straps do break. Wearing really supportive undergarments is going to be super important as well. I don’t blame you for not wanting to change your straps though – the dainty straps are very pretty and feminine, and making those thicker will definitely change the whole look/feel.

Just to give you ideas, look at etsy for detachable bridal straps. Plenty types, and I bet there are some you might like. It will change how the dress looks like, but if it looks good, why not.

When you go for your appointment, ask if they can show you would it would look like so you can decide if it takes away from the dress. Those straps are gorgeous though so I completely understand not wanting to do anything to change them!

They are super pretty! And the back is gorgeous. The only thing I would worry about (DD's myself) is how painful the straps will be after a few hours of digging into my shoulders...

I definitely think that reinforcing the straps and having detachable straps as a back-up are smart ideas!!

Have you decided what type of undergarments you're going to wear? You should definitely bring those to your first fitting! If you're getting all the support you need from the structure of the bodice of the dress or from your bra then you should be fine and the straps will be essentially decorative!

But if you're relying even in part on the straps for support then I'd definitely think about how you can further secure them. Something else to keep in mind is that wedding dresses are heavy!! So you'll have much more garment to support!

I agree with this! They should be able to pin or lightly tack on the thicker strap so you can see what it looks like before they attach it fully. I think its worth it to at least see how it looks.
