Universal Life Church - anyone have any experience with their ordination?

L. Turtle, on March 14, 2011 at 1:18 AM Posted in Planning 0 12

We've decided to have our parents marry us, because having my aunt (a Rabbi) do it isn't working out. Is anyone else having someone get ordained on their behalf to perform the wedding? Any experiences with ULC? It's apparently free, which is nice!

I've had offers from neighbors who are ordained through ULC. Mom apparently was ordaned through them at one time, also. Everyone speaks highly of them, but I haven't gotten to that part yet.

My FH is ordained through ULC and has performed different ceremonies for friends over the years. We will be having a friend or family perform our ceremony for us. He still has to follow certain guidelines.

Just make sure that the county you are getting married in doesn't require officiants to be registered with them. But I've heard decent things about ULC from a few people who are ordained through them.

And if it's free- what's the most you could lose? You've still got 5 months to find someone...

Yes ULC is free! Smiley smile My county (SF East Bay) will ordain someone for the day for $75. But ULC is free, I was thrilled when I looked it up and saw that!

If your county allows a ULC officiant to marry you -- fine. Will your parents get TOO emotional during the ceremony? Are they experienced public speakers?

Yes definitely look up county laws. And make sure to look up the county you are going to be married in. Best of luck.

Thanks so much everyone! Great input. I'm not sure about our county's laws, all it says for Ohio is that an ordained or licensed minister of any religious society or congregation within this state who is licensed to solemnize marriages etc. etc. etc. I got this right off of ULC's website. I presume it's okay, but I'll ask someone who lives stateside to call and confirm for me.

@Nancy - I'm assuming they will be come quite emotional.

@Montara- they will still have to go through the county process, which includes a class. We had someone ordained in the Bay Area as well. Look into it closely.

Be sure to look up the local laws in your area- the last thing you want is for your marriage to be void when it's all said and done!

I'd contact a lawyer or maybe a judge if you know one. Or maybe just go to a courthouse and ask about it. I mean, you still need to get your license before you get married, right? I know that we do in IL.

Is a month enough time to sort this out before the wedding? I won't be in town until July-ish. And can someone from New Jersey get ordained to perform a ceremony in Ohio?
