Unity Tree: In need of a poem

Brittany, on July 8, 2013 at 10:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 2

I decided rather than doing a unity candle we are going to do a "unity tree" Each mother will bring a jar of dirt from their home, the groom and I will pour the dirty into a pot that has an oak tree sapling and then the minister will poor water. I have been on the hunt for a good poem, stroy.....something that talks about the strength of an oak tree, love, and/or marriage but have had little success. Has anyone come across anything like this?

Here is a link I found to show what I am talking about:

The only quote about oaks specifically that I can think of is: "Just think, the mighty oak was once a little nut like you." LOL!

A quote that I have actually used in tree watering ceremonies is from Thich Nhat Hanh:

"The support of friends and family coming together weaves a kind of web. The strength of your feelings is only one of the strands of that web. Supported by many elements, the couple will be solid, like a tree. To be strong, a tree sends more than one root deep into the soil. If a tree has only one root, it may be blown over by the wind. The life of a couple also needs to be supported by many elements – families, friends, ideals, practice, and community."
