daciadanelle, on September 14, 2017 at 5:42 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

I need help finding a plant for a Unity ceremony that can survive in a pot for about two years? I have some very large pots we can use. We live in Indiana zone 6. Help!

I don't know anything about Indiana, but succulents are super resilient and beautiful plants!

If you don't want to have to take special care of it in the winter (e.g. setting the whole pot in a large hole in the garden, or moving it to an unheated garage), the safest thing is to choose a shrub or tree that is rated for 2 zones colder than where you live.

Enter the colder zone number in this search

This article includes trees that are good for zone 6

If you want to plant something that will stay on the smaller side a Mugo pine or a dwarf Alberta Spruce would work.

I've killed so many succulents and I live in SoCal where they grow on the ground! Lol! I'd use a potho because they are really resilient to infrequently watering, bad light, altering temperatures, and being really bad with plants. You can also cut off a vine and stick it in a new pot or vase of plain water and it'll grow a whole new plant!

I would look at trees instead of a plant. I thought the idea was that this grows during the entirety of your marriage. Get like a baby spruce, pine, or you could get the Indiana state tree - Yellow Poplar.

@Jessica- outside California, pothos are houseplants. They are zone 10 and above which means they would not survive a winter in Indiana.

@muriel--she didn't say it had to be outside. Nothing is really going to be terribly happy outside in a pot year round in a location that freezes.

@daciadanelle--pothos is the name of the plant.

Try a Peace Lily. We have one that is 30 years old. Will it bloom? Maybe, maybe not, but the leaves are a beautiful shade of glossy green..

How does a unity plant work? Do you just plant it together during the ceremony?

@StPaullGal- The Unity Plant ceremony normally involves the couple planting a pot or tree which is then moved to the a place in their garden when they have a yard.

People have large specimen plants in outdoor pots all over North America.

I thinks it's a wonderful idea - try a hydrangea or lilac bush. I planted one of each 15 years ago and you wouldn't believe how they've flourished (and every time they do, I think of the day we planted those tiny bushes).

We bought a dwarf cypress. The guy who gave us directions on taking care of it I'm pretty sure told us to water it too much, so it died. But it was an amazing part of our ceremony. We had family bring dirt and dump it into pots and instead of the parents lighting candles they brought theirs up during the ceremony while we played the song dirt in the background. You might try getting some saplings from the arbor day foundation for ever greens.
