Unity Ceremony Ideas!

Mariana, on September 10, 2019 at 9:12 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 11
Hi! So I'm making the itinerary for my aunt who's the wedding planner and ceremony host, and for a DIY. We only have the typical "i now pronounce you husband and wife you may kiss the bride", sign here, exchange vows and that's it type of ceremony and officiant. I've heard many people suggest adding a unity ceremony so besides extending a little the ceremony, it's more special but here's my question. Sorry for my ignorance, but what does a unity ceremony consist of? I've never seen it done here in PR so I'd like to know how I can make one and change a little the typical tradition our families have had. Our concept is bohemian, on a field filled with trees and 2 wooden small houses and GoT details (Only those who've seen the series will notice. Other guests will just look at boho decor.) If so, how can I make it a unity ceremony?

Unity ceremonies are meant to further symbolize the joining of two people. Some people choose candles, each person has their own candle that they both use them to light the one unity candle. There is the sand ceremony, each person has a bottle of colored sand they pour into a container the couple keeps as a reminder that grains of sand are difficult to separate. My FW and I will be doing a handfasting to symbolize not only our union, but represents the trust we put in the other's hands. We hold hands and the officiant binds our hands with a cord I had made in our colors. He then blesses us and our marriage. It's an old tradition that will also represent our British Isles heritage.

I have seen the unity part of the ceremony done with candles which was beautiful I have also seen it done with sand for each person has a jar or glass with sand in it different colors and they both pour into one together and it’s really cool because then they get to keep it forever

We're considering doing a glass pouring unity ceremony, where we'll order the glass pieces in our colors from a company and then afterwards we would mail the joined glass back and get a glass sculpture made. It's a little pricey but the symbolism and results are beautiful.

FH and I are debating between two options. Our first thought was a whiskey blending ceremony where we would each have a whiskey and would pour it into a small whiskey barrel then save it to drink on an anniversary. But more recently we are thinking about doing a tie blanket ceremony, which is a lot more of an "us" thing. Basically we would have a blanket mostly made, then we would tie the last few knots together for the ceremony.

You killed me with the whiskey one!! Saw an example of the wine blending, but didn't come through my mind to change the liqueur. That sounds amazing!!! I feel the blanket would be more special. The blanket you can hold on to it for years and years and years, the whiskey you'll drink it on one anniversary or a few days and that's the end of it. Of course, go with whatever you choose and I hope it turns out wonderfully 💖
