Unity Candle

JustBre, on August 19, 2016 at 7:28 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

We decided we would like to do a unity candle ceremony during our wedding. I emailed my officiant and she's on vacation, so I figured I would get a little insight from you guys as to how these go down!

I read that the mothers can light the candles that we hold to light the big candle. I like that idea. I also kind of like the idea of the candles already being lit before the ceremony begins. What are some of your experience?

Also, is this best done before or after the exchanging of the rings and vows?

Thank you for your input!

It's normally done at the beginning of the wedding by the mothers.....I am having my candles lit by my niece as a symbol of the start of my wedding....something different.

Yes. It is three candles. Two tapered candles on the outside one large pillar in the middle. When the mothers enter the both light an outside candle. Then for the Unity portion you each take your "mom's" candle and light the one in the middle.

Have the moms light their candles after they walk down the aisle, but before they take their seats.

The two of you can light the main candle earlier in the ceremony so it burns longer, if you like. If you wait until after the vows exchange and the rings exchange, it basically will only be lit for the pronouncement.

If your ceremony will be outdoors, candles can be a problem.

My MIL did not want to be part of the ceremony, even refused to walk in a processional. My mother died when I was a kid. I had my nephew light my side and step son light his. Made sense since my brothers were walking me down the aisle.
