Unity candle in or out?

Are unity candles still used? Is there a better alternative?

I think people still use them. I personally think that committing to spend the rest of your life with someone is enough of a unity ceremony, but there are tons of alternatives if you want to do one. Sand, mixing wine or liquor, handfasting, glass pouring, the list goes on and on.

I don’t see people using the unity candle as often as they used to, but one of my friends did it for her wedding last year! We’re doing the Lord’s Supper for our unity ceremony. 😊

Unity celebrations can take so many forms... planting a tree (both pouring soil from mason jars or pretty containers), or even watering a tree, is a beautiful one I’ve seen. I’m considering doing this for our ceremony, since we’re “nature” people. And then we’ll (hopefully) keep that tree alive! You could use this to find a unity celebration that means something to you, not necessarily a candle.

I found it to be a pain due to all our required glass restrictions for the candles... we are opting out and are doing a unity painting instead. He will paint one half and I will paint the other

I’m doing a unity candle. Our moms will light the sides and then we’ll light the middle. I think it’s really sweet and symbolic without any fuss or mess.

My best friend did the unity candle for her wedding, though it is cute it’s not for me! We’re doing a traditional Navajo unity ceremony, since I am native and wanted to bring my culture into our wedding.

Personally the “traditional” unity ceremonies are not my favorite. I did not like the candle or the sand ideas so we tied a fisherman’s knot for our unity! A lot of people said how sweet they thought it was. And I like that I can display it in my home forever!

We're thinking about a unity candle or sand. Not sure which. We're doing what we like, not what other people are doing.

We are doing one. With our three daughters also, to signify the joining of all of us into a family. 💗

We did a reverse unity candle lighting ceremony where we lit our unity candle and then started the chain of lighting our guests' candles.
