Unique ways to get kids involved?

Kerin, on May 21, 2020 at 12:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

Happy Thursday, all! I have a question - what would you think are some planning responsibilities which would be good, fun, and achievable for a 7 and 10 year old? My daughters live with us and they are so excited for this wedding and really want to help. We still have more than 8 months to go, so plenty of time to "fix" or "tweak" anything that may need it before the big day.

I think maybe just bringing them along in shopping for any wedding related stuff or having them pick kinds of flowers (maybe from a pre-selected list).

Thank you, Hannah! They are giving me away (the littler one can't wait to tell FH "here, you can have her" in front of everyone LOL), so I'm thinking they can choose their own dresses and I'll take them for alterations so they can feel "doted on", let them choose their own shoes and let them pick their hairstyles. I'm wondering, which goes hand in hand with your suggestion, if I should let them make their own bouquets to carry when they walk me down the aisle?

I ask them to look at some of my inspiration pics and give their opinions, too.

My FH’s daughter is 7 and I call her my “point of contact” for my wedding coordinators. Any vendor that e-mail me she reads first and “tells me” what to respond. His other two kids (two boys, 3 and 6) have to put the final seal of approval on everything. I made them their own little “wedding planning” books with checklists of things like ‘cake’ and ‘flowers’, and every design they ok and put a check mark beside. The kids like to take pictures of every step (shoes, the venue, etc) and glue them in this book. Those three really think they’ve planned our entire wedding all on their own! We also take them to every appt. with vendors, and they got to (within reason) choose their own outfits and pick certain aspects of the wedding, like donut flavors for our guests and what tasted yummy to be catered for dinner.

"Here, you can have her" 😂😂😂 omg, so cute. The bouquet thing sounds like a cute idea! That way they feel more like it's really theirs.

Yes, they're both little spit-fires...rotten to the core and cute enough (or so they think) to get away with it Smiley laugh I wouldn't have them any other way, though! Smiley heart

    Thank you Smiley smile

I asked my FSS(10) to use his artistic abilities and take one of our family photos and draw / etch it out for display. I also asked for his favorite music to have some of his favorites included in our music selection. And I also asked how he wanted to help celebrate our big day (he's still getting back to me on thatSmiley winking ) But it's all good. He's excited and that's honestly all that matters to me.

Choose poses for bride and flowergirls on instagram together and recreate them! Those pictures could be hang on their bedroom wall. Choose the frames together too.

In my culture, the flower girls are on charge of fixing the brides long train and veil position. So they follow the bride all the time.

If you have any decisions you're truly ambivalent about and you get it narrowed down to a couple choices, you can let them pick between something like chocolate or vanilla cake or lilies or roses for your bouquet. You can also ask them to help with any DIY projects you have! I don't know if you have anything, but arranging their own bouquet should be doable (and you could always redo it). I'd definitely let them go with you to select your wedding dress and make a day of selecting their attire!

I'm one of those unfortunate souls who hates shopping, so my dress was already ordered online, but we've already decided to let them come with us for the cake tasting in August (and made sure it's ok with the bakery Smiley winking ) I feel they would be really excited to be trusted with doing something themselves, so I may have them each take on a few of the centerpieces and then make their own bouquets Smiley smile I really appreciate the feedback and suggestions!! Thank you very much! Smiley heart

Cake tasting is a great idea! That was one of our favorite parts, but it's very kid friendly!
