Unique and Non-traditional proposal stories

Josephine, on January 25, 2020 at 1:12 PM Posted in Community Conversations 1 15

I'd love hear people share their unusual proposal stories. Before I proposed I went searching online for advice or stories about women proposing to men and I couldn't find much, mostly just comments like "don't do it" rather than suggestions about how to do it. I want to share my story in case it will inspire someone debating the same way I was to just go ahead with it! Please share your stories, I would love to here from everyone, not just hetero relationships, and hopefully others will get inspiration and the courage to do what their heart says Smiley smile

My partner and I have been together for 4 years, and have talked about marriage on and off for the last year. He knew I wasn't into jewelry and neither is he, we tossed around a few ideas but didn't follow up. Now, ever since I've known him he has wanted a cat. We've never lived somewhere that allowed a cat but I had a feeling our new landlady was open to it. I knew this would be the perfect way to propose to him! I asked our landlady in secret, telling her my plan and got permission. I contacted a couple shelters and filled out pet owner applications, then once I had a date to meet a cat I purchased pet supplies and hid them in my car. This process took a couple weeks and the whole time I was so nervous about how my partner would react. I called his parents and formally asked permission to join their family and they were super excited! I met the cutest cat on the planet and adopted her on the spot, then brought her home, got down on one knee and proposed to my partner. He was shocked, but over the moon excited about both the cat and getting married! I was super relieved and we have both been enjoying planning our wedding which will be this August.

Aw, that’s the cutest story ever and one of the cutest cats I’ve seen! (We lost our 2nd cat last year due to old age and we’re gonna wait a year before getting two but your pic makes me want one NOW). 🐱 ❤️

    Happy planning!

I adore this! We are both animal lovers. Congratulations on kitty and engagement!!
My fiance and I have been together 8 years this coming June. I gave him his first horse , taught him to ride, I taught him to train, purchased and surprised him with his first "baby" ( he thought she was mine, until I told him otherwise on the way home), I gifted him a mini aussie ( he wanted a puppy forever).
He was so very excited for this surprise vacation he was planning. He had planned for months on end and only told me when we were on our way to our destination where we were going, with our blue heeler puppy (Hooey) in tow. He rented a four story house on Corova Beach, if you aren't familiar, the area is a wildlife refuge. Wild horses call this beautiful place home. On the second to last day, the clouds parted , we took Hooey out to the beach, parked the truck and sat up shop. We were out there a few hours enjoying ourselves, when a conversation about change came up. He got down on his knee with a little brown , leather pouch , I was leaning against the truck and Hooey was wrapped around our legs and said ," speaking of changes..." He proposed with his grandmother's very first wedding ring that his grandfather had purchased for her.

I love love love love love these stories!

My proposal also involved a beloved fuzzy animal!
Background: Sean and I had been dating about two years (and living together nearly as long. Shhh don't tell my dad 😂). I have a dog, Gus (my profile picture) who I rescued 10 years ago when I found out my mom had cancer, and I was alone a lot during her treatment. Gus was and is my everything and has been there for me through everything. Sean loves Gus as much as I do.
Now, starting a few months after we started dating, Sean taught Gus my name and would reward him whenever he successfully went to "go see Julie!" It was so sweet, and cracked me up because Sean would always give Gus that command when I was in the shower 🙄😊
Anyway, I come home New Year's Eve morning after grabbing a coffee and look and Sean and Gus were crouched in the kitchen. Sean says "go see Julie!" Gus, ever the one for comedic timing looks back at Sean as if to say "you sure, buddy?" After reassuring Gus, he walks over to me with the ring box around his collar. It was so special. I cried, Sean cried, Gus waged his tail.
The best proposal I could dream of.

Your story is wonderful! I love dogs so much (I grew up with German shepherds & coonhounds) and I look forward to when we can adopt a dog of our own.

I have a non traditional proposal, but it's not very romantic in nature and features no animals. Having said that, I do want to do a proper proposal on our next visit, but I admit to not having given much thought as to how to do it.

Me and my man are a long distance couple (UK to US), so things are very different because of that. I knew I wanted to marry him after 7 weeks of talking, but said nothing until 4 months in. I then thought about it for a long while, even wondering about proposing on our first visit, but I didn't. A week after I came back from staying with him, I took a day away from him online to think it over.

The day after, I was browsing pinterest, and I saw a pin that struck a chord with me. It explained what I felt about him, which I hadn't yet been able to fully articulate. So I sent it to him, along with my proposal. I explained that nothing would change immediately, so there would be no visa filling etc. I also knew I would have taken him by surprise, so I said if he needed time to process it, that was fine too. He took 2 days to process and think it over, then agreed. He said he "loved me very much, and didn't see it any different." He included a song into his reply, which was very apt for us. I actually plan to walk down the aisle to that song, despite it being metal. Smiley laugh

Aw I think that is a lovely proposal story ❤️!
My partner and I were long distance for two years before we moved to the same state. It was hard but so worth it!
