Unexpected Holiday Fee

Soon2Bmrse, on February 20, 2018 at 12:37 PM Posted in Planning 0 17
We decided 9/1/19 would be great to have our wedding. Its Labor Day weekend and we chose Sunday as the cheaper choice and everyone wouldn't have to work the next day. What I wasn't expecting was a holiday fee. Has anyone else encountered this?

A holiday fee for what? Vendors? Hotels? Travel? Most things are more expensive on holiday weekends.

My venue clearly states on their brochure with prices that holidays and "special dates" (I assume like 8/18/18 or whatever) are subject to a $1500 upcharge on top of normal Saturday evening rates. I think you will find this to be pretty standard.

Holiday fees are pretty standard in my area as well with more popular venues. Sometimes catererers and other vendors also up charge because they could be very busy that weekend.

We're getting married on labor day this year and choose a venue that didn't up the price for a holiday weekend. We never encountered a fee of any kind but we did find that some venues charged the saturday night rate for sunday evenings on long weekends. We asked all the venues about it when we did our initial tour to see what the final pp price would be.

Other than that the only issue we have been having is hotel blocks - but just getting people to send the information - no fees

Venues often have to pay their staff more to work on holiday weekends. Your guests who have to travel will also be paying more. It's one of the downsides of choosing a long weekend.

Most vendors have a holiday charge---normally they are off and get to spend it with their friends/family so it's understandable to pay extra for them to miss out on a holiday weekend

Who wants to work on a holiday weekend? No one, so finding people to work is more expensive.

My venue does a holiday fee for Memorial Day & Labor Day weekends if you book on a Sunday. I believe it makes the pricing the same as Saturdays.

I do not know the specifics since I am not getting married those weekends.

Most venues in our area do not offer any type of discount for Sundays if they fall on a holiday weekend. I can also understand having to pay an additional fee since they will have to pay their staff a premium to work the holiday.

We charge Saturday rates for holidays. It is not uncommon.

It is pretty standard that the venue will either charge Saturday rates for a Sunday on a holiday weekend or add a fee. Hotel rooms, transportation, and labor costs are more expensive on holidays so this extra expense gets passed on to you. You may want to consider how this might affect your guests, especially if you have a lot of OOT guests who will fly or book hotel rooms. Even those driving far will be affected too since gas prices go up around major holidays.

We're getting married the Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend. No up charge at our venue and it was half price of a Saturday wedding. Sorry you're getting hit with that fee. Change the date of you can!

We're getting married Columbus Day weekend, Sunday and we're running into it more with minimum accommodation stays at the different hotels. Some are 2 nights, but many are 3. That's the only place I've seen it so far.

Where I live A LOT of people get married Memorial day weekend and labor day weekend because they are actually two holidays that they typically discount rather than increase the price for.
