Uneven Hemline After Alterations

Lauren, on August 13, 2020 at 5:09 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5
I just picked up my dress from the tailor and it fit perfect. I was so excited and the only thing I noticed that wasn't perfect were my buttons (I had 7 dozen added all the way down and the spacing is a little off, but nothing worth complaining about). I told the employees that I loved it, got home and decided to try it on again. That's when I noticed that the hemline is uneven. The underlayment is the perfect length and even, but the lace overlay is too short on one side - so short I can see the underlayment clearly. I don't think I noticed when I was at the shop because of the way it was laying and if I play with it, it looks fine. I'm just worried that if my photographer takes photos when I haven't adjusted the dress right, it will show. Since it is a lace edge attached to a mesh overlay, there's really no way for them to make it longer again, and if they pull the other side up to match they'll have to shorten the underlayment and I'll need to buy new shoes. Because of Covid, I'm the only one who's seen the dress and none of my friends or family are close enough to give me a second opinion. I don't want to send pictures or ask them because maybe it won't be noticable unless I point it out, and if I don't get it fixed I don't want people looking for the flaw. I'm worried I'm overreacting, but I also don't know how to go back to the tailor after telling them I was happy with it when I left. Should I just get over it and be happy that the rest is perfect?

Could you provide photos here so that you can get an honest second opinion? We won't be there to look for flaws on the big day!

I don't have a full length mirror or someone to take a picture for me, but this is how it looks on the hanger. Keep in mind this is if I were flattening the dress out in front of me, but the way it is made it is not really meant to lay flat (there are two "pleats" in front...not sure if that's the right word).I'm also fine with the very small amount that is showing on the one side, it's more the uneven-ness that has me upset.Uneven Hemline After Alterations 1

Call your seamstress and let them know it’s uneven. You paid them for a service, and they need to fix it. You could just say that you didn’t realize it in the shop, but tried it on again at home and noticed it. I’m sure they want you happy with the results.

Don’t overthink it, just go back and tell them the issue! You don’t know what they can do until you ask. It’s always hard to get a good perspective at a tailor, you will not be the first person to bring something back after the fact!

    UPDATE:

I took the advice to just go back to my tailor. Due to cultural differences, I was really worried he would be insulted, but his translator assured me that he was not. He agreed that the lace was uneven and they fixed it in a few days. I'm much happier with it now. I really appreciate the replies and having this space to vent!
