Uncomfortable dress

Martha, on August 30, 2019 at 8:34 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 15
So I had my final fitting. My mom and the seamstress said there is enough room in the dress. Sometimes I have trouble expanding my lungs all the way, but the seamstress said the boning is just uncomfortable for many girls, and that the dress will stretch out once I wear it more. That being said, we didn’t make changes. I am a bit nervous I won’t feel comfortable.. and my dress is an a-line so it should be comfortable. Not sure what to do besides losing some weight. Anyone have tips on how to make the boning comfortable and does it get better the longer you wear the dress?

Are you wearing any spanx or anything under your dress? That might help to provide a barrier between the boning and your torso to ease the "sharpness" (not sure what word I'm looking for lol) of the design.

I wasn’t planning to especially with the shape of the dress, and my dress is pretty hot. I can try it, I’ve never worn them before so hopefully they’re not as uncomfortable as I am imagining.

I think this is inherent in a dress the style of yours (daughter's was similar). The bodice has to be tight to keep it up where it needs to be, and in the case of daughter's dress the fabric kind of wrinkled in the front when it wasn't super tight (or she didn't maintain perfect posture...). I'd be concerned that if they loosen it or you lose weight (which it does not look like you have anything to lose), I think you might find yourself with a different set of concerns about your dress: feeling like you constantly have to pull it up and/or there being weird wrinkles across the bodice front below your chest. I agree that your dress will likely stretch a little over the course of the day, but, honestly, it's probably going to be kind of uncomfortable because of the style. Odds are you'll be so excited you won't notice or care as much, but still a little bit of a bummer. You look amazing! Smiley winking

First of all you look gorgeous!

Have you looked into a corset? Not that it will make it more comfortable but with modern corsets nowadays the boning is a little bit softer so it might protect you from the boning in your dress. It will also help keep your dress up.

My wedding dress was the most uncomfortable (but beautiful) article of clothing i have ever worn - I loved it, so i just dealt with it. If you have time I would ask if there is room to just let out the seams a tiny bit. Even 1/4 inch would make a big difference comfort-wise and not change the look of the dress at all!

What about a reception dress you can change into during cocktail hour?

It depends on what the material is on whether it stretches. Most dresses, and corsets, are made with the same plastic boning (unless you get a custom steel boning corset). If you are uncomfortable with the boning in your dress I wouldnt recommend wearing an additional corset. I love shapewear since it pulls in but smooths everything. Although it needs to be somewhat tight to keep it in place, you need to be able to breathe so you don't faint. Did you try it on with the shapewear? Maybe try that and if it is still too uncomfortable to wear you can't breathe, ask them to adjust the fit.

    Btw - You look fabulous!!!

I know you said it was your final fitting, and I can’t see the back of the dress, but maybe they can switch to a corset back so you can have it tight enough to stay up, but also not be in pain.

Thank you!! ☺️ And I guess it is normal for this kind of dress. I thought, it’s not a mermaid dress so this should be pretty comfy .. guess not lol, hopefully I am able to just forget about it!

Thank you ☺️ And no I haven’t, I was trying to avoid all that lol. I will get my dress back this week so if it still feels bad, I may have to try to add some barrier.

Thank you! ☺️ I will get it back this week and maybe try the shapewear if it still feels bad. I didn’t even know this dress had boning until my second alternations appointment! I am just not used to it either.

I don’t think they would have time. Hopefully it feels better when I get it back, and I will try to wear it a bit (when fh isn’t there), and get used to the feel.

Ditto this! My dress had to be super tight to stay up and not wrinkle. I couldn't inhale deeply either but honestly didn't notice it the whole night. It wasn't until the next day I noticed because my whole torso was sore! I wouldn't have wanted mine any looser though.
