Uh, Southwest is Freaking Me Out

I have to travel with my wedding gown when I fly out for my wedding in August. I called Southwest to ask about their policies when it comes to dresses, and how the staff tries to accommodate them, and also buy the early-boarding thing so I can secure space if need be. And then she told me that...

I have to travel with my wedding gown when I fly out for my wedding in August. I called Southwest to ask about their policies when it comes to dresses, and how the staff tries to accommodate them, and also buy the early-boarding thing so I can secure space if need be.

And then she told me that there's no guarantee that the staff would let me carry it aboard if the garment back doesn't meet the carry-on dimensions. DUDE. Do NOT make me gate check my damn dress.

Now I'm freaking. Has anyone ever heard of this happening, or does she just "have" to say that, but really no one is that much of a heartless, bureaucratic prick to actually make a woman check her wedding dress because she can't/shouldn't have to ball it up to fit in the little measurement box? HELP OH GOD.

Just pay the $15 to get priority boarding. There will be plenty of room to store it then.

I bought the priority boarding. My concern is the size of the garment bag and whether they'll let me on. When I fly to CA for the wedding, I'm also moving from NYC, so my luggage will be full and i won't have my roll-aboard free just for my gown, like some other brides used.

All I know is when my sister flew cross country with her dress, she was forced to roll it up in a ball and shove it in the overhead. That wasn't SW and I'm not saying that would happen to you, but if I were doing that now after that happened to her, I'd ship it or carefully pack it in a carry on. My FSIL had no problems and lots of brides don't. But the flight attendants were horrible to my sister on her flight and that's the last surprise you need. I'd plan for the worst and hope for the best.

Don't yell and argue. Turn on the waterworks. Who can say "no" to a crying bride?
