Ugh....ready to hurt the people that live above me....

Beth, on August 5, 2010 at 9:58 PM Posted in Planning 0 30

For the last 3 hours the people who live above me have been jumping up and down or stomping loudly off and on. For goodness sakes, you live on the second floor, you know there is an aparment below you, and you know that it's an old house (i.e. wooden floors, little insulation between walls/floors). Why aren't people more considerate of others? I'm just trying to relax after my 11 hour work shift and have to hear a constant, load thumping.

I almost grabbed the broom a couple of times to tap the ceiling like the crazy cat guy from friends, but have resisted.

The worst part is I'm pretty sure the people above me have no kids or pets...so WTH are they doing up there??

I'd go knock on their door and polite let them know that the stomping is pretty loud and could they please keep it down. Apparently you get more flies with honey or some crap like that...

I'm tempted to test my smoke detector a couple times as all of them in the building are wired together, but then I would feel bad for the other people who know how to live in an apartment building considerately.....

    I would recommend the broom!

Or go up there and knock on their door, and ask them to stop making such loud noise!

BROOM!!!! I have done it. And I'd do it again. I was @ a friends apartment and they live in the basement apartment and the ones upstairs only had a new born but my Lordy day those people stomped, screamed, thudded... did everything that could possibly make a noise. We was trying to sleep and the baby just starts skawling (because parents were ignoring it.) and he rolls over and says forget this crap and took the broom and just started banging as loud as he could. it got the parents attention, they tended to the baby, but then the stomping started alll over again as soon as our heads hit the pillow.. we slept with the pillows and blankets over ours heads all night long... it was INSANELY MISERABLE.

Sometimes my upstairs neighbors get a little too loud also...but I can easily toon out sounds so I do okay with it. Last year I had an upstair condo and when my sister would come over, she'd wanna play rockband drums and I'd always have her put a towel under the drum set and she would say, "Why do you care, that's there fault for getting a downstairs condo..deal with it!"...and I just don't believe that. So yeah..there are people who are selfish like that.haha..love my sister but that's not nice!!

    @Kali, that sounds like torture.

Thank you girls for sympathizing with me.

I've lived here for 2 years now and have never had these problems with neighbors....thank goodness I'll be all moved out next weekend.

About a year ago the people that live adjacent to me (on the same floor) were constanly having parties....I mean every single night until at least 3 or 4 in the morning. They had 2 entrances to their apt...one that joined with one of my entrances(which is in the bedroom, I know stupid design) and one that went straight to the parking area which was not shared with another apartment. Wouldn't you know they only ever had their "guests" (as well as themselves) use the one near my bedroom which was constantly waking me up. They also purposefully set off the smoke detector at 2 am one morning (it was during the week) and did not turn it off for about 15 minutes. I shoot out of bed thinking "CRAP, FIRE, grab the cat, where's the cat?, do I need anything else? (cont)

Until I heard all the laughter coming from the apartment next to mine. The landlord heard about that one for sure....I had to be up at 5 am to go to work.

@mrs. turner: way to stick up for downstairs neighbors! One of the apts FH is going to look at for us (yay!) this weekend is on the third (top) floor! I was so excited, but then I also stressed how we really have to watch the noise since we'd be above someone else!

I have this problem accept it's a drunken lady next door who screams and yells at the top of her lungs, and has violent altercations with her BF... I can't even tell you how many times I have called the cops!

Today she was screaming that she was moving out.. Thank God!

Hopefully your noise makers will move soon too :0)

Yea, if I wasn't leaving it would not be good (they just moved in within the last months). The leases here run May to May, but many people don't move in until July or Aug. I THANKFULLY found someone to take over my lease since FH lives 2 hours away and of course I'll be moving in with him in just about 2 months!!! YAY! Until then I will be living with the FIL's because it was more likely to find someone to take over my lease now rather than in Oct (more chance of getting college students since classes start at the end of the month or people who were moving back to the area since the summer is almost over).

Ah, yet another reason that I am so happy not to live in an apartment. I did for a short time, after I graduated from college....when I rented an apartment, I rented the top floor. Elephants walk all night....F 'em! So, I made sure that I was on the third floor.

Moved out just prior to getting married. We moved to another apartment, but a really nice one with 4 units and 20 houses in the complex. We lived on the 2nd floor, above a retired lady. She was a gem..and we tried to be quiet for her.

We then moved to a house. From there, no more rentals! No more apartments. I feel for those who live in an area that their neighbors cannot respect. I do feel that apartment dwellers, today, no longer respect their neighbors.

My daughter found that in one apartment complex. She and her new husband are now in a really nice complex and they have two of the three floors of their building. They have a one bedroom unit below them...then have the townhouse above......(cont)

(cont) this at least means, no neighbors overhead.

That, in my world, would be the worst!

For those of you who have put up with other renters, who are a paid, check with your local government. Some of these items can be a violation.

Also, if your rental (house or apartment) needs work, you may be able to withhold rent, until the repairs are made. In my city, if you rent, and there is a repair issue, you do not have to pay your rent until the repairs are made (once you notify them). Once the work is done, all past due rent is due.

This protects renters from bad landlords. I did this, in my only apartment. My A/C didn't work. I notified the landlord on the 30th of that month, a 31 day month. The wife told me "We will get someone out there in the next 3 weeks." Umm, it was 100 degrees! WRONG!

I told her, "My attorney told me that if you fail to repair my A/C, I can withhold my rent payment until it is repaired." Amazing....my A/C was repaired the same day.

Moral to the story, KNOW your rights, as a renter!

Wow. LOL. Kathy I totally didn't know that. But when I was in an apartment our landlord and our maintainence main was amazing. We'd call him directly and he'd come right away. I didn't know you could withhold rent, that's awesome. LOL.

Oh my gosh! I hate living in a apartment. I live on sixth floor and someone ALWAYS work out and run around on the floor over me. I was like are you freaking serious!? We don't even work out in the apartment because we don't want to upset the neighbors :-/. I feel that neighbors are so selfish now today.

FH had an apartment that was on the bottom floor. The neighbros above used to vacuum at 4am. And I swear- it wasn't a normal vacuum- it was a freaking wind tunnel! That thing was so loud and they used to bump into EVERYTHING! One night, I just went and pounded on the door. They never answered, but never did it again...
