Uber or Shuttle from Hotel

Alisha, on May 26, 2022 at 9:44 AM Posted in Planning 0 11

Hello Everyone -

I found a very nice hotel that is about 15 min drive from our wedding/reception venue at a country club. One downside about the hotel is there is no shuttle. It cost a few hundred dollars to a grand to book a shuttle service. I think I will only have 10-15 rooms blocked out for our wedding, so it doesn't make sense to spend a lot on shuttle service when there will not be too many people.

So it got me thinking - does it make sense to ask guests who are planning to drink a lot to Uber to the venue? Have anyone done this already and have any suggestions? Thinking about offering to pay for their Uber by giving them Uber/Lift vouchers or gift cards. Thoughts?

I think that’s a good idea to offer to pay for Uber for your guests! You don’t want the stress of anyone drinking and driving on your big day!

We will only have 8 people staying in our room block including us (the wedding is local to most attendees) so we are setting up an event on the Lyft website, which gives us a code to give to guests to get a free ride back to the hotel. https://www.lyft.com/events

We are also about 15 min from venue to hotel, BUT we looked into availability of ubers in the area, and ultimately decided on paying for a shuttle because ubers were VERY limited. So if the availability isn't an issue, go with the ubers, if it's like mine where ubers are limited, then maybe reconsider the shuttle.

We are in a city so I am not too worried about it. But now since you mention it, I should probably check the avability.

    Thanks!

Unless you have guests you specifically are worried about drinking and driving then I would not worry about it. If your guests are old enough to drink then it is on them to drink responsibly. They can carpool from the hotel or pay for a taxi/uber/lyft. My husband and I decide before attending an event which of us is driving home. Also, your bartender should be keeping an eye on how drunk the people they are serving are and ask them how they are getting home. You can specifically ask them to do this if it is not something they already plan on doing.

Drinking and driving is not too much of my concern. My guests know better. I want my guests to be able to drink and not worry about driving.

Its completely up to you if you want to offer a shuttle but if you decide not to I would just leave it up to the guests. Maybe have a list of local taxi companies at the venue in case anyone needs them. Uber can be hit or miss especially on weekends the waits can be excessive and so can the cost. Happy planning!

Provide numbers to contact local cab companies or an Uber promo code. You don’t need to spend money out of your pocket on something that is their responsibility to arrange and pay for.

Does anyone know if Uber still charges a service fee for uber events? I set up an Uber voucher and it seems great but now I'm nervous about the 2.5% service fee I'm reading about and can't find it on their website. Trying to decide if I will use uber or lyft

    Thanks.

I didn't see it when I tried to set one up.

I went through everything and stopped right before confirming and paying for it. I would assume if there is a service charge, it will show up on your payment page, they can't really charge you if they didn't inform you on the payment page.

Looking through their terms and condition

"2.2. Voucher Creation Fee. In consideration for creating an Uber Voucher and related services, at Uber’s discretion you may be required to pay Uber a voucher creation fee (“Voucher Creation Fee”) for each Uber Voucher created. If applicable, the amount of the Voucher Creation Fee will be specified on the Uber Vouchers platform and will be charged at the time of Voucher creation to the credit card designated in your Account and will be non-refundable after the Uber Voucher or Program is created, regardless of whether the Uber Voucher is ultimately utilized. For the avoidance of doubt, the Voucher Creation Fee is not a fee to access Uber Vouchers or any other aspect of Uber’s platform."
