Types of Alcohol at Wedding

Benjamin, on June 30, 2016 at 10:49 AM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hello all,

My fiance and I are planning a beer/wine bar and two signature drinks to be served at our wedding. Our venue does not have a bar-tending service so we will be bringing our own alcohol and bartender. So now to my question. We have no Idea of how much of the different types of alcohol to bring. We have looked at the calculators online but most of them ask about how many beer drinkers/wine drinkers/liquor drinkers are coming. We have no idea of our guests preference when it comes to alcohol. So my question is how should I go about this? Just over buy and hopefully be able to return unused portions or maybe add a card in the RSVP about alcohol preferences. This is just one point that we don't know where to start with. Plus I have only been to one non-dry wedding so I have little reference as to how to plan this. Thanks in advance for the help.

Thanks,

Ben

Hi Ben! The bartending service that were using actually sits down with us and will go through how many guests we have and the amount they suggest we should buy as well as if we want a signature drink and so forth. Would your bartending service/company do this with you? Maybe if you asked them they could give you some guidance and work with you! I agree that the websites do not help at all as far as calculating how much you need.

    How many guests?

I didn't need to go through our guest list because my entire list was full of heavy drinkers so we went above and beyond on alcohol. Most people drink 2-3 drinks at a wedding if they are a moderate drinker, more than that for heavy drinkers. I believe we had 20 cases of beer, 24 cases of wine, and 5 cases of champagne for 130 guests and we had left overs.

But we kept our left overs. I believe though unopened, some places will let you return them.

Who ever you go with ask about return policy on unused alcohol. I'd rather over buy than run out.

You can't return alcohol in the State of California. Check the rules before you try to do that.

Thanks for the suggestions. We are not going with a bar-tending service. We are using an acquaintance of ours that is TIPS certified (required by venue) so I don't know if he would be the best to ask about the amount of Alcohol. Also as far as the return policy I need to look that up. For the beer there are distributors which we can shop around for best return policies; but as far as the wine and liquor it is through the State stores so I need to see what the State's policy is on this.

Most servers I've gotten quotes for offer to go over what bring. I recommend finding the server first.

Yes they require insurance which we will provide. I will need to ask the venue about suggestions, since we are so far out I haven't had much contact with her in the last month or so but that would be a good option.

I would offer 3 types of beer and 3 types of wine. Other than that, I'm sorry I'm not able to be much help!

We're also trying to figure this out. Luckily we found a liquor store that allows us to return unopened bottles of wine and beer, so our plan is to overbuy. We're going with 3 types of beer, 1 cider, and 3 types of wine.

We tried to get a rough estimate of who would drink beer or wine from our guest list, though I agree it's hard to do. I think we decided our breakdown was about 60% wine and 40% beer. Then we guessed about a drink an hour per person. We're planning on buying 1.5-2 times more than that haha.
