Before I started talking to people, I just thought a 2 year engagement was pretty standard, but apparently most people and sites lean more towards 1. I've therefore noticed thay both WW and The Knot use checklist timelines that span across a year. I'm fairly newly engaged (March 30th) and I was just wondering if anyone had any advice on how to space everything out in a way that keeps the process exciting with minimal stress. The only things we have done is look at venues (which we are pretty set on which one we will chose but still have their showcase to attend this month) and came up with a tentative guest list. I was thinking of doing an engagment shoot and party sometime this summer, and figured I'd look for a dress in about a year? I would love some input on the matter!

We have known each other since Aug 5, 2014 (only know that because a chat messenger marks the date we friended each other), we started dating Memorial Day 2015 and he proposed on Dec. 22, 2016. Our wedding is Nov. 5th 2017. So we've known each other 3.5 years and dated a year and a half prior to engagement. Less than a year seemed fine for us, likely would have been married sooner but vendors and other wedding planning needed more time. Most places for Spring were already booked and we had two weddings to go to (ended up being three), one of which he was a groomsmen in. So between those things and me liking the idea of a Fall wedding we set it for Nov. Our guest list will be about a hundred. I think a year is plenty for personally planning a wedding this size. I've bit it off in chunks. I selected most vendors and the venue within the first couple months. The guest list, wedding website, and fine details I've been slowly doing over time. I dress shopped 6 months out and have started coordinating with my bridesmaids via a Facebook group I started to share ideas and get their opinions. I've seen advice that says not to pick your party till later but I started picking mine early, partially because the local bridal show targeted at Fall weddings was a week and a half after my FH proposed...another reason I jumped on vendors. The bridal party wasn't finalized till almost 6 months out though and my FH is still deciding. Because our wedding was less than a year from the engagement I've used WW's timeline loosely and more as a reminder. Good luck and congratulations.
