Two Weddings

My fiancé is Guyanese-African and we’re incorporating his culture by having the traditional Guyanese Kwe-Kwe. The Kwe Kwe is Saturday and our wedding is Sunday. With having two celebrations, the planning is intensified by two. I have to book double everything( two venues, two caters, two DJ’s). Any future brides having cultural pre wedding celebrations. Any advice that can be given is greatly appreciated.

    So cool that you are deciding to encorporate your cultures into your wedding weekend! I am Vietnamese and my husband is italian. In Vietnamese culture we do a Traditional Tea Ceremony which acts as a formal meeting between the two families/engagement/marriage. We had our tea ceremony the day before the western wedding as well. The Tea Ceremony also acted as our rehearsal luncheon which was held at a big Airbnb house that we rented for my family to stay in through the weekend. My biggest advice is to get a wedding planner if you can afford it! I didn't realize how much work it would be to not only plan 1 but basically two weddings! I even had a day of coordinator for my western wedding and it was still so overwhelming. I wish I had hired her for both the days because the Tea Ceremony is basically the wedding in Vietnam. On top of that my wedding was a semi destination wedding. My parents and family are from Florida and we had our wedding in San Diego so there was a lot of missed communication since I was just so busy running around the week of the wedding that I didn't even get to throroughly go over the tea ceremony with my parents and family but I was so lucky that my uncles and aunts and cousins helped out a bunch. The weekend was wonderful and full of incredible memories but even though I thought I was organized, there were just so many little things that came up that it was tough to juggle it all while still trying to enjoy the moment!

    Your amazing I did not even think to have the rehearsal dinner the same day as the Kwe Kwe. That will save me time by merging events together. Also a money saver as well.

    We will have one cultural wedding. I'll be in a Korean hanbok, and he'll be in a kilt. The dress attire is culturally representative, so it's more like a cultural free-for-all rather than just focusing on one or two cultures. We will also have another wedding, but it will be for just the two of us. The cultural wedding is for guests.

    Hi Tracey and Dr. Julian! What an awesome idea to include both of your cultures into the wedding celebration! Have you thought about hiring a wedding planner for it? I would suggest looking into a planner who may be familiar with the traditions in a Kwe-Kwe wedding, that way they can help with everything you need for both the Saturday and Sunday weddings! If not, I would say to ask for help and guidance from his family to see what is needed for the Saturday wedding.     I am going thru this same struggle being Guyanese myself and the rehersal dinner the same night as the KweKwe would make alot of sense... basically having just the wedding party coming for the rehersal dinner and the guests to come later to join in for the kwe kwe! But I am having my wedding in Puerto Rico and having a hard time finding a hall to have the kwe kwe instead of paying $8-12k for a space for the kwe kwe in a hotel. Thanks!
