Two States, One Last Name...

Jessica, on March 28, 2020 at 2:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

Hello Everyone!

I am very ahead of the game right now, but I would like to figure this out now rather than later. We are getting married in Tennessee in October 2021. From everything I have read you get your marriage license, and use that to change your last name. My problem is that I live in Illinois and wondering if I can still use my Tennessee marriage license to change my name is Illinois on all of my documentation. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

What state your marriage certificate is from doesn’t when it comes to changing your name on your social security card since that’s a federal document.

They won’t care at all what state your marriage license is from! I would just make sure to get a few certified copies of your marriage license while you’re there (like maybe 3 to be safe) just in case you need to submit it with something (I know when you get your passport you actually have to send them an original copy and you don’t want to be without your only copy). And if you live in a different state it would be more difficult to get another copy later on, not like you could just go to the county clerk and ask for another.

Yes I definitely planned on getting multiple copies/ originals because I know I am going to put one somewhere and years later maybe not remember. I'm hoping they aren't going to be too fussy about it when I want to change everything.

I wouldn’t foresee any problems from it being a different state.

I live in IL and we got married in DE. I had zero trouble changing my name. It may just take them a second to find the relevant info if the paper is laid out differently than how ILs is set up.

We got married in a different state- zero problems using our certified marriage certificate for name changing. Aside from DMV pretty much everything else was Federal anyway (passport, social security, etc). I did not change my name on real estate, brokerage accounts, or my car- haven’t found it worth the hassle.
