Two DJs? Is this normal?

Earlier this week, while I was emailing our DJ about other things for our wedding, I asked him what his meal choice was (we're doing a plated dinner and the venue/caterer asked me to get preferences from our vendors).

His reply was "Might be two DJs so two chickens please. When is your final head count?"

Never in any of our prior communication or in our contract was it mentioned that there would/could be an additional DJ. I was taken by surprise and sent back a quick reply before thinking it through, just letting him know when the final numbers would be in, and asking whether there was an additional fee for the 2nd DJ.

Response: "No just not sure if there will be just yet Smiley smile"

I want to email back and ask for some clarification - will we have to pay more or not? Is he training this person? Where did a second DJ come into play? But I wanted to check with the community and see if this is normal and I just wasn't familiar? Any advice for how to phrase my email, because I'm flummoxed.

I think my dj has an assistant.

I would recommend just giving him a call to discuss.

It sounds odd, but he seems like he definitely won't be charging you, so... no big deal!

They shouldn't charge if there are two people. I mean, the food cost will be a little higher but your contract price should not change.

Almost all DJs I've seen come in pairs especially at weddings. The last wedding I was at the dj brought his gf..whether as an assistant or just company I couldn't tell! One of our local djs is a husband/wife pair. The DJ we hired works with her sister. I didn't ask, but I assume they will both be coming!

My dj has an assistant that he brings. He is included in our contract.

I do understand the frustration of ordering two meals when only 1 dj may come.

Thanks everyone for your insight! I'd honestly only seen solo DJs st all the weddings I've been in or attended.

Any suggestions for wordage when I email back? My brain isn't on its game after my 10 hour workday today (minus some WW breaks).
