Tuxedos with tails...

Katie , on February 7, 2018 at 7:50 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13
So very early on, my FH said he wanted to wear a black tuxedo with a tail. At first I was like "okay, it's his day too and it seems like he's pretty certain of it ", cool, whatever. well when I mentioned it to my mother and FMIL they both said that that style was outdated and was traditionally worn for a morning wedding. are they correct? what's proper etiquette here? also, do they even look okay in pictures? our ceremony is at 1:30 in a Catholic church (being married by a bishop), and reception will be at 5:30. any input or even pictures of their bridal party in tuxes with tails would be appreciated!

I’m not sure about the morning wedding aspect of it but I haven’t seen tails on tuxes in a long time. I didn’t even see any in stores when we went shopping for my fiancé.

If that is what he wants then I see no issue with it. That style is still available... They had them at the tux shop we were at last week.

FH was in a black tie wedding last year in NYC, the groom wore a black tux with tails. The rest of the GM wore regular black tuxes, and it actually looked great in photos.
The wedding was very formal, though.
In any event, if that’s what your FH wants, it’s his decision. Your mother and FMIL shouldn’t have a say in what he gets to wear.

Yeah I'm totally supportive of whatever he wants to wear and they absolutely 100% have no say, I was just curious because I've never seen a tuxedo with a tail in person.. thank you all !

If the wedding is black tie then I say he could totally wear the tails. If its not and he wants to wear something different he could always wear a white coat or a white tie to break it up.

It's pretty formal, not sure I'd go as far as black tie though. he's very old school and traditional so he's definitely set on wearing a black tuxedo, white shirt, black tie, black shoes.

My DH wanted to wear tails too, but our wedding wasn't very formal, so he went with a grey three piece with a morning coat. That might be a compromise your FH could look into since the shape of a morning coat is slightly less formal than a full on tux, and he could still get it in black. But like people have said, if his heart is set on a full black tux with tails he should totally just go for it.

I don't have any good pictures handy but this at least gives you the idea of the shape. Don't mind the cravat, he's such a Brit, lol

That's a great suggestion, thank you! did all groomsmen go this route or just groom?

All the groomsmen wore the same, and the dads wore whatever grey suit they already had at home and we bought them (regular) ties and pocket squares to match the other guys. I don't personally believe dads have to match the wedding party, but my DH didn't trust his father to choose something, so this was our work-around, lol!

Found another pic, two GMs in morning coats and a dad in the regular version!
