I believe tuxedo tails are for a white tie event only which is a step above black tie.

The wedding will be formal but not black tie. I have never been to a wedding with tails and I just really think it may too dressy. It will be a 6:30 wedding and I believe black tuxedos or white jacket would be great but the groom wants tails. Am I overthinking?

I wouldn’t wear tails at a wedding that isn’t even full black tie. But if he really wants to it’s not a hill I would die on.

Tails are for white tie events only - the most formal of the formal. They should never be worn before 6pm, so you're good on that, but honestly if I went to a wedding and the groom was in tails I'd think he was incredibly overdressed. A regular tuxedo would be far more suitable.

Wow, tux tails should never be worn before 6 pm? I didn’t know that. You learn something new here everyday! 🙂 My hubby does have a tux with tails he was going to wear to a 1920’s party but he got sick so we had to miss it.

I dont think coat tails are appropriate unless you're having a formal wedding and everyone adheres to the appropriate attire.

Here's where WW confuses me and I say this with love. One woman posted about her FH purchasing a suit with a different coloured jacket than the trousers which also didn't match the wedding colours and didn't work for the wedding, and she really wanted him to wear something else. And people went off on her telling her the Groom had a right to wear whatever he wanted to the wedding just as she chose whatever dress she wanted. Yet, here the FH wants to wear tails and it's all about it isn't the done thing. I'm confused about how we feel about what a groom can wear.....Smiley heart

A color is different than something that doesn’t match the formality. It would be like wearing a tuxedo to a rustic casual wedding at 1pm, not appropriate. Like I said it’s not a battle I would die fighting. But black or white tie attire requires different things then just I like how this looks. Hope that makes sense.

My FH mentioned the possibility of a "white tux w/tails" but it's because he's stuck in the 80's, not because our wedding is going to be that formal. LOL

So, when he mentioned it I told him, "honey, that outfit is going to stay in the 80's where it belongs!"

He was a little disappointed, but eventually got on board with my more "modern" version of what he should wear.

I am so glad I found this thread. I just had this conversation with my wife. We did a tiny ceremony, her dad is a pastor. But we are planning a traditional weeding. I want the tuxedo tails. She gave a strongly worded rebuttal expressing her opposition, lol. I am appreciative for the knowledge. I guess she will win this battle.

Tails are formal evening wear but unless a wedding is super laid back and informal a groom won't look out of place in white tie. White tie is a pretty strict dress code though and it looks best when you do it the classic/traditional way (and many rental places have absolutely no idea what the "rules" are), so you have to be careful in that regard. Show them a picture of Fred Astaire (or feel free to ask me if there are questions).

Best to go with a self-tie bow tie instead of one of the crummy pre-tied clip ons.
